I've been quiet in this space for a while, I know.

2025 has been a bear for many of us, but especially for those in the DEI space. The work of centering each other's humanity in our interactions has been demonized, and the performative nature of the efforts of so many organizations was laid bare. '

I could have spun myself in circles trying to decide exactly what would be my next move.

Instead, I did the opposite of what I've typically done. I got quiet. I listened to the wisdom within me. I read, thought, and reflected. In the face of campaigns to target and humiliate Black women, I celebrated our inherent beauty, brilliance, and resilience.

Rest was my form of resistance.

In 2026, I recommit to prioritizing rest and look forward to doing the work of healing from toxic systems in community. The Rest is Resistance Virtual Book Club is a 10-week guided experience explores doing less as a form of resistance using Tricia Hersey's essential book. This collaboration with Charlette Glaus of Incite for Change will encourage us to unlearn, restore, and dream together.

If this headline surprises you, then you're not paying attention.

2020 did not bring about a racial reckoning. It caused discomfort, so people moved to half-hearted action. Ticking checkboxes makes organizations feel like they're doing something.

Companies feared being called out as performative on social media, then engaged in actions that were exactly that.

This work isn't a project plan that you can check off as complete in Q4. Look around and see how little progress has actually been achieved. How do you know? When the going gets tough, DEI gets scrapped. "It's too expensive," is often a protest often heard after the initial gloss has worn off and the hard work is evident.

If investing in valuing and elevating the humanity and voices of Black and brown employees is not a priority, then you were never interested in change. You wanted good press.

We see you.

The wave of change in workplaces through diversity, equity and inclusion roles has quelled, and Black workers will feel the brunt of the officers' absence.

"Progress, not perfection."

Like me seeking Angela Bassett arms after countless kettlebell workouts...😂😭

It's a needed reminder for many of us related to perfectionist tendencies. We must give ourselves grace and celebrate the progress of forward motion. ➡️

The same advice is an important reminder for those engaged in DEI work. This is a marathon, not a sprint. The pace of societal change can seem glacial. But giving up is not an option. So it's imperative to look for the signs of progress around you, and within you.

❓️How are you showing up every day to challenge systems of oppression around you, and within you?

❓️How are you taking action by expanding the work within your workplace and community?

❓️How have you gotten back up to learn and grow up after making a mistake?

If we wait for perfection, we'll never move forward. It's about making steady, deliberate progress.

Keep. Going. 🏃🏾‍♀️💪🏾

Yesterday, I introduced one of my favorite quotes to a new audience. I had the pleasure of speaking about navigating conversations about race and equity with a group of amazing educators. This quote was my invitation to replace the discomfort and defensiveness that can come with this notion: It's about being a better human to these amazing humans that you teach each day. 🍎

Education plays a critical role in our collective march towards justice, so educators have a special place in my heart. They must approach their work with the same courage that they ask for from students.

As the school year begins and teachers are under fire from every angle for simply doing their jobs, give a heartfelt thank you to the teachers you know. Support them. Voice and show your appreciation often. Hug them. A good teacher is an artist whose creativity unlocks lifelong confidence and inspiration in our kids. 🎨

To the educators I spoke to yesterday, thank you for the passion, courage, and care you show to kids each day. ❤️

Lest we need a reminder that the difficulty of celebrating Independence Day for those never seen, respected, or given full rights by this country is not new.

"I am not included within the pale of this glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me."

-Frederick Douglass, from "What, to the Slave, is the Fourth of July"
