I run into these critical junctions with couples daily. Being able to support your companion in their life initiatives & identity questions are like forks in the road with multiple trajectories in regards to trust & safety. The most important thing I've heard from couples is to ask questions that love the person & listen. This seems deceptively simple, but especially when you have a stake in their own questioning & possible decisions (ie: changing jobs or going back to the workplace, going back to school, philosophical & spiritual questions, etc), it really can be tough to REALLY enter their experiences & set your own opinions aside, but that needs to happen to grow trust & love.

It’s easy to miss out on opportunities to support our partner when they need it most. Here are five times to be ready to step up.

A longtime client of mine used the Japanese art form of Kintsugi as a metaphor for Appreciative (Generous) Stories. Generous Stories highlight the absent but implicit in people's lives regarding their values, recognizing context in the choices they & others make, how even the painful "cracks" in our lives can offer meaning & even beauty. The "Joint-Call" is my favorite version, bringing in other "broken pottery" pieces to further beautify.
