We continue to enjoy opportunities to lead virtual trainings and workshops. One way to increase engagement immediately is to welcome individuals as they join a virtual meeting space just as one would in-person as the host/facilitator.
In the virtual room say hello and inquire how each individual is arriving once they enter the virtual space. “Welcome, Jason. How are you doing today?”
This will give you, the facilitator, the chance to hear individual’s voices, check their audio, and begin to create a connection with your participants. One benefit from this tip is we find participants tend to turn on their video when they respond and keep it on, when they are greeted individually and asked a direct question.
As you begin to start your virtual session, continue to engage individuals by name: “Tanya, I saw you smile in response. Can you share what led to your reaction?” This type of active facilitation will set the expectation that engagement is encouraged.
