Last night, members of Fairfax Fire Department and Atkins Fire & First Responders teamed up for some live-fire training at Kirkwood Community College’s burn tower.
Crews worked together on fire attack, ladder operations, and saw operation and maintenance. Training alongside neighboring departments helps build teamwork, sharpen skills, and keep our firefighters prepared to serve our communities.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to train and to Kirkwood Community College for hosting us. We appreciate the opportunity to learn and grow together.

Thank you Chief Rust and Norway Fire Department for sharing this with us. We appreciate the help when needed and always enjoy working together.

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of sharing some of our water with another one of our mutual aid departments. This water was received through the NVFC 7G Distributing Grant.

The Fairfax Fire Department is one of Norway’s valued mutual aid partners—one we know we can count on when help is needed. We always look forward to working alongside Fairfax and all of our other mutual aid partners.

Water was shared with Atkins, Newhall, and Fairfax—three departments we work with frequently. We wanted to take the opportunity to show our appreciation for the relationships we have built with these departments and the support we provide one another.

Mutual aid is about more than responding together—it’s about building relationships, supporting each other, and making sure we are there when our communities need us most.

Thank you to Atkins, Newhall, and Fairfax for everything you do and for being great partners!

This morning a few members were out doing some pump training in the Heartland Heights neighborhood. The engine crew worked on hydrant set up, master stream, and hand line water flows. This helps with building skills and confidence while running our trucks.

Congratulations to our Assistant Chief Marcus Burns on his promotion to Captain at Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

Ahem...make that CAPTAIN Burns.

Congratulations to Marcus Burns on being promoted to Captain today. Captain Burns is a trusted member of the team and will do well leading from the right-side seat.

He is also an active volunteer firefighter with the Fairfax Fire Department so his heart for service is strong.

On Saturday, May 30, the Fairfax Fire Department hosted a live-fire training burn. Members of our department, along with several of our mutual aid partners, had the opportunity to participate in valuable hands-on training, including roof ventilation operations and multiple live-fire training evolutions.
Training opportunities like this are difficult to come by, and we are incredibly grateful to the homeowner for generously allowing us to use the property. Over the past year, firefighters conducted numerous training exercises at this house, building skills and preparing for the final live-fire burn.
These realistic training scenarios help firefighters gain experience in a controlled environment, strengthening the skills needed to respond safely and effectively when real emergencies occur.
We would like to thank everyone who participated, assisted with planning, and helped make this training a success. We also extend our appreciation to our mutual aid partners for their continued support and commitment to training together. Working and training side by side ensures we are ready when our communities need us most.
Thank you to the homeowner for providing this unique opportunity and to all the firefighters who dedicated their time to making this training possible.
