The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is responsible for security cooperation and operational oversight of missions conducted in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is deploying 4,000 Marines, US Navy Amphibious Groups, and other battle-ready personnel into Latin America. This mission is underway as ordered by Donald Trump.

- On Friday, the US Navy announced the deployment of the USS Iwo Jima, the 22nd MEU, and the two other ships in the Amphibious Ready Group — the USS Fort Lauderdale and the USS San Antonio — but did not say where they were going.

- One of the officials emphasized that the military buildup is for now mostly a show of force, aimed more at sending a message than indicative of any intention to conduct precision targeting of cartels.

-- But it also gives US military commanders — and the president — a broad range of options should Trump order military action. The ARG/MEU, for example, also features an aviation combat element.

The deployment of the Marine Expeditionary Unit has raised concerns among some defense officials who worry that the Marines are not trained to conduct drug interdictions and counter drug-trafficking. If that is part of their mission set, they will have to lean heavily on the Coast Guard, officials said.

Just four days after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, he fired several agency watchdogs—inspectors general—that investigate claims of waste, fraud and abuse in federal spending. Since then, I’ve sent Freedom of Information Act requests to nearly every agency that has an office of inspector general to find out exactly who was fired and what the response was to the dismissals.

The Securities and Exchange Commission responded with a couple dozen pages of documents that reveal how the regulator prepared for the possibility that its own inspector general would be next (she was spared). Inspectors general, or IGs, are a vital part of the federal bureaucracy.

Former President Jimmy Carter signed the Inspector General Act of 1978 that introduced IGs in the executive branch. Half of the 73 IGs are appointed by the president, while the rest are appointed by the head of each agency. The law says the president can remove any presidential appointees, but only after a 30-day notification is provided to Congress.

The independence and impartiality of IGs allows them to conduct investigations and audits free from political interference. They’re also an accountability arm for government employees who want to blow the whistle. I routinely file FOIA requests for IG reports, which lay bare what’s taking place behind the scenes. (Right now, the Defense Department’s IG is investigating Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s use of Signal to discuss military actions in Yemen.)

When Trump started firing inspectors general on Jan. 24 it shocked the IG community and was widely seen as an attack on their independence. Trump did not bother notifying Congress and no reason was given for the purge.

Instead, the IGs caught in the crossfire received a tersely worded email sent to them by either Sergio Gor, a Republican political operative and the director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, or Gor’s deputy, Trent Morse. It said “...due to changing priorities” their jobs as inspector general were “terminated, effective immediately.”

On August 6/2011, a CH-47D Chinook helicopter operating with the call sign Extortion 17 was shot down while transporting Quick Reaction Force attempting to reinforce a Joint Special Operations Command unit of the 75th Ranger Regiment in the Tangi Valley in Maidan Wardak Province, southwest of Kabul, Afghanistan.

The resulting crash killed all 38 people on board.
