In September 2016, a letter was sent to FBI Director James Comey by two US Senators, asking that the FBI undertake the collection of data on the criminal acts of domestic violence and stalking. In their letter, Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Joni Ernst point out that the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting system--which in 2016 began collection of crime data on animal cruelty--does not presently collect data on domestic violence or stalking, exposing "a dangerous gap in the FBI's crime data collection program."
