Fiber internet is always the better choice. Here’s why:
Fiber has faster available speeds.

Fiber internet can easily deliver symmetrical upload and download speeds of 1 Gbps or more—LEO internet is asymmetrical, and upload speeds are significantly slower than download speeds.

When you see 3 Rivers advertise a speed of 100 Mbps, it means upload and download are both 100 Mbps. When an LEO offers 100 Mbps, they are generally referring to download only. Upload speed may be important for folks who work from home, and other users as well.

3 Rivers delivers broadband internet service using Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), the best technology available, linking co-op members to our world-class fiber optic network with a direct fiber connection to their individual homes or businesses.

LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites, such as those utilized by Starlink, send a signal to a dish from satellites orbiting from 500 to 1,200 miles above the Earth.

2027 FRS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

The Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Scholarship is available to any high school senior that receives local telecommunications service from 3 Rivers Communications. The applicant must be accepted by an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school, have at least a “C” grade point average and express an interest to return to a rural community following graduation.

FRS now offers a scholarship for nontraditional students—adult learners enrolling in accredited undergraduate, college, or vocational programs for fall 2027, including those returning to school or balancing work and studies.

HOW TO APPLY

Visit frs.org/programs/youthprograms/scholarships to find a link to the application platform, Kaleidoscope. You must access the application via the Kaleidoscope link on the FRS website.

Apply by February 15, 2027 11:59 p.m. EST. One application qualifies you for all available scholarships.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You MUST be a 3 Rivers member to be eligible for an FRS scholarship. To verify membership with 3 Rivers prior to completing the online form, you may contact Lisa Brady, Scholarship Coordinator for 3 Rivers, at 406-467-4132.

3 Rivers recently received a NTCA Smart Rural Community (SRC) Showcase Award. These awards recognize outstanding achievement by rural broadband providers that lead projects to advance their communities. The award was accepted by 3 Rivers staff and board members at the recent NTCA Fall Conference.

The focus of our application was how we make supporting education a priority through our Youth Technology Grant program. 3 Rivers has awarded nearly $160,000 to schools and libraries to help purchase laptops, tablets, educational software, and other technology tools that expand learning opportunities. Our commitment to education extends even further through annual scholarships, teacher retention grants, and partnerships with schools and libraries. During the pandemic, we worked directly with local schools to connect nearly 200 families with Internet service so the students could continue to learn from home during school closures.
