Fine Art Restoration - Conservation - Art Placement & Installation

Troy entered the world of art restoration in 1977 working as a studio apprentice in southern Westchester County, New York, under highly respected Dutch art conservator, Yan Vanderviver. It was that unique opportunity that sparked Troy’s passion in the craft of art conservation, setting him on a path towards an unyielding career as a fine art oil painting conservator from a young age. From 1977 to

1995 Troy held studio positions focused on the preservation of fine art in New York, Connecticut and Los Angeles. It was during those formative years that Troy earned a respected reputation for his conservation work from art collectors, art galleries, and private museums throughout the North East and West Coast. In 1996 Troy and his wife, Denise DiGrigoli, founded Troy Fine Art Services, an art conservation studio modeled on the philosophy that each client and painting is unique and should receive only exceptional personal attention. By maintaining a small studio approach, you can always be assured of who is working on your painting. As principal conservator, Troy believes that all restorations should be as noninvasive as possible while only performing processes necessary and vital to revive a painting as close to its original state as possible. Troy maintains a strict code of ethics in line with the American Institute for Conservation, and ensures that all work is archival and reversible. He lectures regularly on the cause and effect of art restoration to groups and organizations throughout New England. Troy Fine Art is located in Fairfield, CT, and Troy and Denise welcome clients to their studio for restoration evaluations by appointment while also visiting clients at their home, or where the art is sited. Our studio is conveniently located in Fairfield, Connecticut. We meet with you in person in our studio, or your home , and virtually via Zoom, by appointment. We have been proudly providing fine art services to clients in Fairfield County, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and beyond, since 1997. 203-255-1555

BEFORE-During-AFTER: Painted between the mid 1700s and early 1800s, this painting has been in the client's family for at least a generation. Though restored about a century ago, it later suffered damage after years of being stored in a basement.

When the artwork arrived at the studio, the lower portion of the canvas showed extensive water damage and paint loss. The earlier restoration had included a relining, but that lining was beginning to fail, pulling away from the original canvas.

Decades of exposure left the surface heavily obscured by grime, oxidized varnish, and layers of soot likely from fireplace smoke, candle use, and even to***co.

Each layer of varnish, soot, and grime was removed to reveal the original paint beneath.

The restoration began by carefully removing the weakened lining and transferring the artwork onto a new, stable lining for long-term preservation.
Cleaning revealed just how many layers of varnish and grime had accumulated over time. Each layer was methodically reduced using conservation-grade solvents and techniques, bringing the painting back to its original tone and balance.

Significant areas of paint loss, especially along the bottom three inches and parts of the midsection, required careful reconstruction. Missing sections were filled and in painted.

To complete the restoration, the painting was re-varnished using a modern conservation-grade varnish. Unlike the varnish used in the original restoration, this formula will not oxidize or yellow. This painting is now ready for the next generation to enjoy.

-----The Signs Your Painting Needs Professional Attention----
-Yellowed or cloudy surface: Old varnish can darken, giving the artwork a yellow or brown cast.
-Cracked or brittle varnish: A fine web of cracks in the protective layer.
-Patchy gloss: Some areas shine while others look matte, showing the surface isn’t uniform anymore.
-Flaking or lifting paint: Small curls or chips of paint breaking away.
-Visible mold, water stains, or smoke damage.
-Warped canvas or sagging stretcher.Painted
