Fall Break Is About More Than Bringing Home Laundry
By this point in the semester, the excitement of move-in day has most likely worn off. Students have settled into their routines, experienced their first round of exams, and learned that college expenses unfortunately extend well beyond tuition and textbooks.
There is late-night food, gas expenses, weekend plans, replacement chargers, and all the little purchases that never seemed important enough to include in the original budget.
When your college student comes home for fall break, possibly carrying several weeks’ worth of laundry, it can be a good opportunity to ask how things are going, personally and financially.

➡️ Is the monthly budget lasting as long as expected?
➡️ Have any expenses been surprising?
➡️ Are they checking their bank account regularly?
➡️ If they are using a credit card, do they understand when and how it gets paid?

These questions do not have to feel like an interrogation. The goal is not to criticize every purchase. It is to help students become comfortable talking about money, recognizing mistakes, and adjusting before potential small problems become much larger ones.

Parents and grandparents have had years of financial experience that cannot always be taught in a classroom. Fall break may be the perfect time to share some of it with the next generation, perhaps while the washing machine is running😁

Retirement may be your decision, but it rarely affects only you.
The timing of retirement, where you live, how you spend your time, and how much financial support you provide to relatives can all affect the people closest to you. Future healthcare or caregiving needs may also place new responsibilities on a spouse or adult children.

That is why some retirement conversations should begin before a decision or crisis forces them to happen.

Does your family understand your retirement goals? Have you discussed where important financial and legal documents are kept? Do they know whom to contact if you need help? Have you talked openly about housing, healthcare, caregiving, and the kind of legacy you hope to leave?

These conversations may feel uncomfortable at first, but clarity can prevent confusion and conflict later. A thoughtful retirement plan should prepare your finances for the future while helping the people you love understand the role they may play in it.

September is National College Savings Month, a timely reminder that preparing for a child’s education does not have to begin with one large contribution. It can begin with a plan.
The cost of college, trade school, and other forms of education can feel overwhelming, especially when families are also balancing retirement, everyday expenses, and other financial priorities. Starting early and saving consistently, even in smaller amounts, can give those contributions more time to grow and potentially reduce the need for student loans later.

A 529 plan is one option families may consider. These tax-advantaged accounts can be used for a broader range of qualified educational expenses than many people realize. However, education savings should always be considered alongside the rest of the family’s financial plan. Parents should not jeopardize their own retirement security in an effort to cover every dollar of a child’s education.

This College Savings Month, consider asking: Are we saving in a way that supports both our child’s future and our own?
We explore college savings, 529 plans, and the importance of finding the right balance in our latest blog: https://gulfcoastfa.com/retirement-funding/saving-for-college-without-sacrificing-your-retirement/

Check Out Our New Video: 401k Rollover Sharks: The Sales Pitch Retirees Should Question

What should you do with your 401(k) when you retire, and how can you tell whether the advice you receive is truly in your best interest?

Your retirement savings may attract plenty of recommendations, but moving your money without understanding the risks could lead to unnecessary fees, restrictions, or tax consequences. Before moving decades of retirement savings, it is important to understand your options and recognize when advice may be driven more by a sales opportunity than by your needs.

In this video, we reveal the “401(k) rollover sharks” to watch for before making one of your biggest retirement decisions.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, a good reminder that life insurance is not something to purchase once and then forget about.

As your life changes, your coverage may need to change with it. Marriage, divorce, a growing family, a new home, business ownership, retirement, and the loss of employer-provided benefits can all affect how much coverage you need and what role it should play in your financial plan.

This month, take a moment to review your existing policies:
➡️ Do you understand what you own?
➡️ Are the beneficiaries current?
➡️ Would the coverage still provide the support your family would need?
➡️ Does it continue to serve the purpose for which it was originally purchased?

Life insurance is only one part of a financial plan, but it can be an important one. The goal is not simply to own a policy. It is to know why you own it and whether it still fits your life.

It may feel like 2026 just began, but we are already approaching the final few months of the year.

Before the holiday season and year-end deadlines arrive, September can be a good time to pause and ask: Am I on track with the financial goals I set for this year, and what do I need to address before December 31?

That might mean reviewing your retirement contributions, checking your investment strategy, preparing for required minimum distributions, evaluating charitable-giving plans, revisiting your beneficiaries, or beginning a conversation with your financial advisor and tax professional.

It is also an opportunity to look ahead. Are there major expenses, retirement decisions, income changes, or family needs you should begin planning for in 2027?

Financial planning does not end when the calendar changes. The decisions made during the final months of this year can help create a stronger, more intentional start to the next one.

There are still a few months left in 2026. How are you using them to prepare?

National Grandparent's Day - Sunday, September 13, 2026

Grandparents Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate the relationships, stories, and lessons that connect generations.

It can also be a meaningful time to think about legacy planning. A legacy is not limited to the money or property someone leaves behind. It can include the values they pass down, the opportunities they create, and the conversations they have with the people they love.

For some grandparents, that may mean contributing to a grandchild’s education. For others, it could mean helping family members understand their financial wishes, reviewing an estate plan, sharing important documents, or simply talking about the experiences that shaped their approach to money.

The strongest legacy plans are rarely built around finances alone. They help ensure that your resources support the people and purposes that matter most to you, and that your family understands the intentions behind your decisions.

This Grandparents Day, ask yourself: What do you hope the next generation remembers and carries forward?
