AllStar Ecology designed and built the In-Lieu Fee mitigation project for The Nature Conservancy in Ohio at Baker Swamp. It was a great honor to be at the ribbon cutting ceremony today as it became the 150th state nature preserve managed by the ODNR.

A new species for the state of West Virginia!! Pale Sedge (Carex pallescens)

AllStar Ecology provided a team of biologists and botanists to conduct Post Mine Land Use Surveys in Preston County, WV. During the survey, Justin Devault found an unrecognized sedge within the project area. Upon carefully identifying the specimen with diagnostic keys, we determined the sedge to be Carex pallescens. We then referenced NatureServe to see what the state ranking association was, and it was at that point we realized this species had never been found in West Virginia.

A voucher specimen was collected and then taken to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources office in Elkins, WV where the state's Heritage Department reviewed the specimen and verified the new state record. This is a really awesome find and once again I am proud to be part of an incredible botany team. This one literally goes down in the history books of West Virginia's Natural Heritage!!!

A brave group met up yesterday to brave the winter snow for our 6th annual Mountaineer Heritage Hunt.

We were happy to continue towards our wildlife and property management goals with further reduction of the deer herd and protection for the tens of thousands of tree and shrub seedlings planted around existing stream and wetland mitigation projects and for the thousands of seedlings getting planted this year as we finish construction on a new compensatory mitigation bank. Over a foot of snow made for interesting conditions and exhausted hunters.

Thank you WVDNR for the additional opportunity with the heritage season to get out and enjoy the outdoors in the Mountain State.

From "Waidmannsheil" ("Hunter's Salute")

"This is the hunters shield of honor,
That he protects and fosters his game,
Hunts like a huntsman, as it should be,
Honors the creator in the creature!

The bullet of war is ruled by hate, -
Love towards the game guides the hunting r***e:
So think at your daily bread
Does your game not suffer either?

Protect it from man and animal as well!
Shorten its pain of death!
Be rough outside, yet gentle within, -
So your shield of honor remains unspoiled!"

Tipularia discolor, cranefly orchid. Found during a delineation in Pleasants County WV on December 16. This orchid produces a single leaf in fall, which remains throughout the winter. The underside of the leaf is purple. The leaf disappears in spring before the flower, which is pollinated by moths, appears during summer.
