Fun little science experiment.

This is a simple science experiment you can start today… and then let time do the work.

With just salt or sugar, water, and a little patience, kids can grow beautiful crystals that slowly form over days. It’s a great reminder that not all learning happens instantly — some of the best science takes time.

WHAT TO DO:

You’ll need:
• Salt or sugar
• Warm water
• A jar or small bowl
• Food coloring (optional)
• Small rocks, sponge pieces, or charcoal

Steps:

1. Dissolve ½ cup salt or sugar in 3 tablespoons of warm water until no more will dissolve.

2. Pour the solution into a shallow dish with your rocks or sponge pieces.

3. Add a few drops of food coloring if you’d like.

4. Place the dish somewhere it won’t be disturbed.

In a few days, crystals will start to form. In a week or two, you’ll have a garden of crystals.

No rushing. No fixing. Just watching and noticing! This is real science — observing change over time.

It’s been a little quiet over here at Thompson Trails Homeschool Consulting lately — and honestly, it’s because I’ve been pouring a lot of time and energy into my other small business, Knotty Notions. When you’re a multi-passionate, small-town, self-employed human, sometimes one project has to take the front seat for a bit.

But Thompson Trails hasn’t gone anywhere.

Behind the scenes, I’ve still been thinking, planning, and reworking ideas for how to better serve our local homeschool families here in Chautauqua County. Homeschool life has seasons — and so do small businesses.

I’ve got some new ideas, new resources, and more community-centered plans coming soon, especially for families who want practical, flexible, real-life homeschool support without pressure or fluff.

If you’ve been thinking about homeschooling, feeling stuck, or just needing a sounding board, I’m still here and still doing what I love: helping families build something that actually works for them.

🎓 Vocational Pathways for Homeschool Teens in Jamestown, NY 🛠️👩‍🏫

Let’s talk about preparing our homeschooled teens for life after high school — with real skills and real-world opportunities!

📌 Important Note:
In New York State, homeschool students are currently NOT permitted to participate in BOCES CTE (Career & Technical Education) programs due to state restrictions on dual enrollment. 😞

But don’t worry — there are awesome alternatives for our teens in Chautauqua County:

🧰 1. Jamestown Community College (JCC) – College Connections
Homeschooled students can take dual enrollment college courses, including technical and career-focused subjects. Great for building transcripts and getting a jump on college or career training.

🔧 2. Local Apprenticeship Programs
For teens 18+, trade unions offer earn-while-you-learn apprenticeships in fields like electrical, construction, HVAC, and more. A great route to skilled careers without traditional college.
🔗 NYS Apprenticeship Programs

🤝 3. Job Shadowing & Volunteering
Reach out to small businesses in your community—mechanics, vet clinics, daycares, bakeries, salons, and more. Many are happy to let teens shadow or volunteer to gain hands-on experience.

Earn certifications or explore new fields from home! Options include:
