California JATCs hosted a statewide Title 24 and Mechanical Code Update Seminar Series across four locations: Castroville, Fresno, Sacramento, and Ventura.

NEMI's Western Region Representative Steven Winstead co-presented with Chris Ruch of SMART Local 104, covering the latest California energy and mechanical code changes, ASHRAE standards, fire and smoke damper inspection requirements, and opportunities in the residential heat pump market.

A big thank you to the SMACNA chapters, SMART Local 104, and apprenticeship coordinators Alex Titchener, Brad DeYoung, Eric Priest, and John Kroon for making it all happen.

Congratulations to the newest TABB Supervisors!

We just wrapped the first of three regional TABB Supervisor Seminars and Certification Exams, a new format that replaces one large annual event. This inaugural session took place at Local 104's JATC in Fairfield, CA.

19 experienced TAB professionals from 5 different Local Unions spent four days in classroom instruction, applied theory, and hands-on lab activities covering heat flow dynamics, air distribution systems, electrical theory, and supervisory oversight of TAB reports.

A big thank-you to the on-site Subject Matter Experts, Pat Pico and Scott Brehmer, from Local 104, for guiding participants through an excellent week of training!

On Day 4, participants had the opportunity to take the TABB Supervisor Certification Exam, and we're proud to share that 9 new TABB Supervisors were certified, earning a nationally recognized credential issued by the ICB.

Congratulations to all who participated, and especially to the newly certified supervisors! 👏

Best of luck to those enrolled in the second seminar, coming up August 3–6 in Central PA.

Interested in the final seminar, Oct 12–15 in Chicago?

Contact: Sheila Livingston at [email protected] (cc: [email protected]) with the participant's full name, email, phone number, and SMART IA number to register.

The 2026 NFPA Conference & Expo in Las Vegas was a tremendous success, bringing together more than 8,000 fire, electrical, and life safety professionals for three days of education, innovation, and critical industry dialogue!

We were proud to be part of it and grateful that over 200 attendees joined our breakout session, "More Than Comfort: How HVAC Systems Save Lives in Fire and Smoke Events."

A special thank you to Steven Winstead, NEMI Western Representative; Phil Montuori, NEMI Northeast Representative; and Kenneth Bosket, TAB Specialist & Instructor for SMART Local 88 (pictured) for doing an outstanding job leading the session.

Most people think of HVAC as a comfort system. Fire and life safety professionals know better. In a fire event, the HVAC system is managing smoke, protecting egress, and buying critical time for occupants and first responders and that only works when the system has been properly verified by certified professionals.

It was great to connect with industrial hygiene professionals from across the country during the recent 2026 in New Orleans.

TABB-certified technicians and Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA) contractors work hand-in-hand with IH professionals to verify HVAC performance, measure real airflow, and confirm that ventilation issues are truly resolved — not just patched.

Thanks to the team members who were hand representing TABB and SMACNA at the event: Phil Montuori, Craig Reehten, Shelly Dixon, Geoff Parks, Rallin Harris, and Jason Hilton.

We appreciate all the conference attendees who visited our booth and look forward to having further conversations about future partnership opportunities.

Hampton Roads ASHRAE hosted a joint panel with the Virginia School Plant Managers Association (VSPMA) and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) to foster a more in-depth public discussion on the development and implementation of HB 2618 / SB 1413, with a focus on the perspectives of those who will be directly impacted. The event drew representatives from 43 Virginia school districts.

Our Northeast Representative, Phil Montuori, was joined by:
• Dr. Emily Yen – Architect of the Virginia IAQ Bill
• Dennis Knight, P.E., FASHRAE – Founder and Principal of Whole Building Systems, LLC

The panel was moderated by John Bailey, Ph.D., Director of Operations for the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

The discussion was highly engaging. Technical questions were raised regarding IAQ surveys, and NEMI's "Uniform IAQ Inspection & Evaluation Report" summary form was very well received by all in attendance.
