Congrats to DLH IBA team member Ethan Quist, whose career as a robotics engineer at TATRC was featured on the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command's "25 Days of STEM" initiative.

Ethan Quist

Read below to get a glimpse into life as a robotic engineer at the U.S. Army Telemedicine & Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC)

1. What is your position title and how long have you served in your current position at USAMRDC?
I am a Robotics Engineer and I have been working for the TATRC-MEDRAS team since January, almost 1 year.

2. How does your position impact the Warfighter and the Nation at large?
I am working on developing new autonomous technologies to either help quickly find an injured warfighter, help autonomously extract a warfighter from a hazardous situation, or help perform combat casualty care from tele-operated robotic systems.

3. What is the best and/or most rewarding part of your position with USAMRDC?
The most rewarding part of my position at TATRC is knowing that the projects I work on all have the potential to save lives. I also very much enjoy being able to work on cutting edge research every day as we aim to push the limits for the current state of technology.

4. What was your catalyst to becoming a scientist or engineer? (List a specific moment, person, internship, that inspired you. etc)
I always had a passion for building and constructing things as a child and engineering came as an obvious career path. After college I was working as an engineer in commercial manufacturing and had lost the spark and love for the job. I knew that I rather be working as an engineer in a more meaningful and impactful industry. That is why I went back to graduate school to specialize in medical robotics where I knew that anything that I put my energy into developing would hopefully make an impact on someone’s life.

5. What is your degree in - AND - what school did you attend?
I earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Engineering at Clemson University (Go Tigers!) and then a Master’s of Engineering in Robotics from the University of Maryland, College Park.

6. Favorite Holiday treat /memory/ or tradition?
My favorite memories and traditions about the holidays is all of the great food. Christmas Eve always has Swedish Meatballs for dinner and then Christmas Day always a honey baked ham with peppermint ice cream for desert (plus way too many holiday cookies).
