52 years ago today, on September 2, 1974, President Gerald Ford signed the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) into law. Fittingly, it was signed on Labor Day, establishing important federal protections and standards for employer sponsored retirement and health benefit plans.

More than five decades later, ERISA continues to play an important role in healthcare. For hospitals navigating complex commercial claims, understanding how ERISA protections can apply to the claims and appeals process can uncover opportunities that might otherwise be overlooked.
