Does everybody work just for the money? No. Surveys show people have other major reasons for working like purpose (my words - being a part of something bigger), recognition (my word - affirmation), camaraderie, and growth opportunities (my words - challenging your brain and mental capacity.) Keep this at the forefront when you are trying to retain and hire employees.

In an at-will state, can I fire an employee without notice? The answer is yes. Can an employee sue you if they feel the firing was unfair? That answer is also yes!

I grew up in my HR career applying the Seven Steps of Just Cause, because I worked in government where this was part of the due process government employees are entitled to.

These steps are reasonable for treating employees like human beings. And applying even some of them in an at-will state can help protect your business from risk and help decrease the emotion associated with a negative employment action, both for you and the employee!

What is an administrative investigation? It’s a non-criminal, fact-finding inquiry into performance, behavior or policy violation concerns. HR or an outside investigator reviews relevant documentation and interviews management representative(s), the employee in question, and any other pertinent parties. Then the investigator provides a report of findings and recommendations for next steps.

I believe AI is valuable. I have used it some and respect it’s positive qualities. I also think it will take us from isolating and scrolling social media to getting tired of questioning what’s real, so will desire more authentic human face-to-face conversations! What do you think?

Although I definitely don’t suffer from perfection in my personal life (don’t fold sheets, minimal dusting, free from keeping score in Scrabble!) I do struggle with it at work. I would change the last line to “Perfection is subjective.” What would you change?
