NEWS: LambdaVision is partnering with Helogen Corporation to advance the future of scalable biomaterial manufacturing in low-Earth orbit.

This mission will mark LambdaVision’s first planned flight outside of the International Space Station and represents an important next step toward regulated, scalable production of our protein-based artificial retina in space.

Through 9 missions to the ISS, LambdaVision has demonstrated the feasibility of manufacturing 200-layer protein thin films in microgravity, where reduced gravity improves homogeneity, stability, and performance.

The collaboration with Helogen grew out of conversations initiated through Boryung’s Humans in Space challenge in 2023, highlighting the importance of building a global ecosystem to advance space-enabled healthcare and biotechnology innovation.

Healthy Vision Month is a time to prioritize eye health and raise awareness about vision loss affecting millions worldwide.

At LambdaVision, we are working to restore meaningful vision for patients living with retinal degenerative diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, conditions that impact over 50 million people globally.

We’re working on developing our protein-based artificial retina designed to replace the function of damaged photoreceptor cells, offering a new path forward for those facing blindness.

As we continue advancing this technology, including manufacturing breakthroughs enabled by microgravity, we remain committed to transforming what’s possible for vision care.

Big news from LambdaVision!

We’ve officially pre-booked commercial space in low-Earth orbit with Starlab Space, a joint venture led by Voyager Technologies, to support scaling manufacturing of our protein-based artificial retina.

After 9 missions to the International Space Station National Laboratory, we’ve demonstrated that microgravity improves the quality and consistency of the 200 ultra-thin protein layers that make up our artificial retina. Now, we’re preparing for the next phase: transitioning from ISS research to long-term commercial manufacturing in orbit.

Our goal is simple but powerful, restore meaningful vision for patients blinded by retinal degenerative diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration.

This partnership helps ensure continued access to space as the ISS approaches retirement and supports the growth of a commercial low-Earth orbit economy that benefits patients here on Earth.

Vision loss from age-related macular degeneration affects everyday moments—reading, recognizing faces, and maintaining independence.

At LambdaVision, we’re working to address this challenge through science and innovation. Using research conducted in microgravity aboard the International Space Station National Laboratory, we are developing a protein-based artificial retina aimed at restoring vision for people living with retinal degenerative diseases, including AMD.

During AMD Awareness Month, we recognize patients, caregivers, and clinicians—and reaffirm our commitment to advancing solutions that could one day change what’s possible for those affected.

News from LambdaVision!

We’re excited to share that we’ve closed a funding round backed by 776, Aurelia Foundry, and Seraphim Space, including investments from E2MC and Boryung. It is an important milestone as we continue to advance our protein-based artificial retina and scale space-based biomanufacturing to support the development of life-changing therapies on Earth.

Our CEO, Nicole Wagner, Ph.D, will also be joining the 2025 Payload Investor Summit on November 5–6, speaking on the panel “Demystifying Space Bio: What’s Keeping More Space Bio Startups from Getting Funded.”
