Highlight from chapter 2
“We have to keep in mind that a soccer game, a tennis match, a football game, and so on is what it is: a game.”
What is a game? One definition for the word game is, “an activity providing entertainment or amusement”. (Online American Heritage Dictionary)
How important or to what place on the priority list should an amusement or entertainment be when considering all the various aspects of our lives such as our job, education, family, health, and our relationship with Almighty God? I have my answer but I cannot answer specifically for you, but allow me to give you some considerations to ponder.
I have never been to a professional football or basketball game. I have attended college football and basketball games from time to time, and I have attended a few (5 or less) professional soccer games. Did I enjoy them? Absolutely!
Did I spend too much money each time? Absolutely! From the price of the tickets, to travel costs, to food expenses, and possibly souvenirs, it can really cost a ton of money to attend these type of events.
If you are like me you don’t have that kind of disposable income on a consistent basis. Here’s the thought that I’ve had many times when considering whether to attend a professional sports event.
“Why am I going to go shell out my hard-earned money to pay for tickets, travel, food, souvenirs, etc., then go sit in cramped seats, be around rude people, get beer and other items spilled on me, and be expected to yell and scream and cheer the team on, when the owners and the professional players are the ones making tens and hundreds of millions of dollars at my expense? They should be the ones paying me and the other fans to come cheer the team on.”
This system is messed up.
Do we really value sports more than say family, education, etc? The easy answer is “no”. But take a serious look at where we spend our time, money, energy, and most of all, our heart, and that answer will most likely change. Don’t get me wrong, I am a sports lover myself, but I’ve had to reevaluate my priorities. Some businesses lose a lot of money during the basketball tournaments that occur in March. The Monday after the super football game in early February is a wash out for many companies. What does all of this say about us? That answer is for another day, but I invite you to give it some careful thought and answer it truthfully.
