This flower, the daylily, is one of the first flowers that i designed with.

My parents owned a wholesale nursery. I hated working with the plants, but I loved the flowers. Each summer I would raid the day Lily beds and my mom’s garden so that I could make arrangements that my mom would put around the house. Since daylilies last for just one day I would create a new design each morning.

I don’t have any pictures of those early designs. I’m 53 now and even if my parents took pictures, they weren’t digital. I’m sure the designs weren’t great but day after day, summer after summer, I loved creating those arrangements. In college I began working at a flower shop that started my 32 year career as a florist.

Now I work with other flowers…the traditional roses, lilies, orchids, and I’m proud of the designs that I can create. But I wonder, what I have spent my life as a florist if my parents had grown something other than Daylilies?

What do you do when your blue hydrangeas did not arrive on time?

We paint them! Using Design Master paint, design specifically for flowers so it is a lighter weight spray and has very little sent. We can custom tint Flowers. This works best when you go for my light color to a slightly darker color. In this example we go from a white hydrangea to a light blue hydrangea.

Bonus tip: painting hydrangeas in this fashion actually helps them last longer. The pain act as a sealant, and they lose less moisture through the petals.

We recently moved our floral studio and the light is completely different here. I’m spending hours taking photos in various places to learn what the light does. These images were taken midmorning on a covered porch in the heat of summer.

I love designing with bright colors and summer. They just seem to go together.
