The Moral Roots of Liberals and Conservatives
How these groups score on five foundational moral elements

In this 18-minute TED Talk, moral psychologist Jonathan Haidt outlines the five foundations of morality:
* HARM/care;
* FAIRNESS;
* INGROUP/Loyalty;
* AUTHORITY and
* PURITY
and actually charts how 23,000 liberals, conservatives and moderates rate the importance of these moral elements.

Haidt's conclusion: Once you see that liberals and conservatives both have something to contribute - that they form a balance on change vs. stability - then the way is open to step out of the "moral matrix" (the struggle that plays out between change and stability).

Psychologist Jonathan Haidt studies the five moral values that form the basis of our political choices, whether we're left, right or center. In this eye-opening talk, he pinpoints the moral values that liberals and conservatives tend to honor most.

THE CROSS-SECTION OF 9/11, MISS AMERICA AND
NEIGHBORHOOD BUILDING
Doug Shipman addresses the power of inter-religious dialogue

29 minutes may be a long time to invest in a video, but wow! Doug captured our minds and imagination at the Neighborhood Summit. If you only have 4-5 minutes, start at the 1:49 mark of this video.

Over 400 community activists throughout Metro Atlanta descended upon the 2013 Neighborhood Summit on September 21, 2013. The theme: One Region. The keynote s...

DO FORECLOSURES DISPROPORTIONATELY AFFECT HISPANICS?
Using maps to make visualized correlations

This map shows how the foreclosure crisis is disproportionately affecting the Hispanic population, particularly the cluster of Hispanics in Gwinnett. This map was created by selecting those areas with the highest foreclosure rate (everything above the “50”
line on the lower right scatter plot). The map displayed the percent of Hispanics, thus by selecting only those areas with high foreclosure rates in the scatter plot, we can isolate the areas with both high foreclosure rate and high Hispanic concentration.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEXUS GRABBING NATIONAL ATTENTION
Visualizing the spatial distribution of jobs and workers

Neighborhood Nexus was featured in a national workshop in June, the US Census Bureau’s “2013 Local Employment Data Partnership Workshop”. One of the workshop presenters was our own Mike Carnathan, a researcher at Nexus partner Atlanta Regional Commission. Mike co-hosted a workshop to showcase how organizations are learning to visualize the spatial distribution of jobs and workers. You can see a powerpoint of that presentation here: http://1.usa.gov/13AtnbI.

CAN YOU MEASURE THE "SUBURBANIZATION" OF POVERTY?

One of the most significant changes of the past decade is the changing geography of poverty. Once confined to dense urban centers and remote rural locales, poverty has spread forcefully into the suburbs. But, it's not like poverty has disappeared in the urban core - it increased slightly, in fact, and the heaviest concentrations are still found within a relatively small swath inside the City of Atlanta. But that small increase in the urban core was dwarfed by the increases found in the suburbs. To read the full story, see maps, other visuals, and a video, click http://bit.ly/1ect4bO.

AT LARGE vs DISTRICT VOTING IN FAYETTE COUNTY
Did you miss last week's debate about whether Fayette should change from At Large voting to District voting? (for County Commission and Board of Education positions.)
Here's a fairly balanced article about the debate...

Both sides of the district voting debate aired their differences in a “debate” March 19 at the Harvest Community Christian Church.

Attorney Wayne Kendall told the crowd that district voting is necessary because history has shown that black candidates have been thwarted by their white counterparts in races for seats on the county commission and the county board of education.

The contrary opinion, aired by Fayette County Local Issues Tea Party member Bob Ross, is that black candidates have failed to win election in Fayette County due to poor campaigning or facing a more qualified opponent, not because of their skin color.

What's your say?

Should Fayette County change from "At Large voting" for its county commissioners - where residents can each vote for all 5 commissioners - to "District voting", where residents only vote for the commissioner in their district?

There will be a debate on this Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30pm. Generally speaking, "At Large" voting gives residents a broader say across the whole county, while "District voting" gives residents in individual districts a stronger opportunity to elect the candidate of their choice.

SHOULD FAYETTE CHANGE TO "DISTRICT VOTING"?
Join us for this important debate, March 19, at 7:30pm, at Harvest Community Church, 383 Fayette Place, F'ville 30214 (behind Dairy Queen on Hwy 85).
Co-sponsored by the Fayette County Branch NAACP and Fayette County Local Issues Tea Party.
