North Atlantic right whale mom “Cashew” and her calf were sighted by Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute’s aerial survey team flying from Georgia on Wednesday, February 5. The new mom-calf pair were observed off the coast of Nassau Sound, Florida.
These whales are highly endangered with only an estimated 370 left in the wild. During the current calving season, they may be seen along the Southeast and Gulf Coast. Boaters are reminded to keep a lookout for these slow-moving whales, which are at high risk for boat collisions. If you see a whale, reduce speed and operate at a slow speed until you have left the area. Give whales space and do not pursue them. Federal law requires at least 500 yards distance for all vessels. Please report any whale sightings to (877) WHALE-HELP or to the Coast Guard via VHF-FM CH 16.
