This is one of those times where I wish I would have taken some better before and after pictures. This particular deer was left in a walk in cooler until June. To say it was rotten would be an understatement. The beetles weren’t really interested in it as I had a fresh skull in at the same time. After doing some research, I pulled the skull from the beetles and soaked it in cool water for an hour. Doing so, “rehydrated” all that left over meat and when I gave it back to the beetles they went into feast mode. The hunter is beyond happy on how this turned out and that’s what keeps me going.

If you have any old dead heads you’ve found that you want turned into a wall worthy mount get those salvage tags and bring them to me, I will gladly get them fixed up for you!

I had some good help in the shop today.
This is the degreasing process, the purpose of this step is to pull out those stubborn fats and oils from the bone. This step could be skipped completely and you could go straight to whitening, but over time there is a chance of those fats and oils seeping out and turning the bone yellow and even leaving a foul smell. The length of this step varies animal to animal, some being more stubborn than others. These particular skulls will sit for another week, changing out the water every couple of days and be ready for whitening. Stay tuned!!
