Yesterday, Chamber Board Member and Scholarship Committee Representative Maiya Ashby had the privilege of presenting three Botetourt County Chamber of Commerce Scholarships during the James River High School Scholarship Presentation. Chamber Board President William Nelms and Executive Director Jacqui Sobieski were also in attendance to help celebrate these outstanding students and their accomplishments.

Each student received a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their hard work, leadership, and plans for the future.

While Madeline Rutledge was also recognized earlier this week during BTEC’s Signing Day celebration for her incredible accomplishments in cosmetology and her plans to attend the University of Lynchburg, we were proud to again celebrate her alongside fellow recipients Gavin Binns and Silas Whitson.

Gavin will continue both his academic and athletic career at Bridgewater College, where he plans to study computer science while playing football and running indoor track.

Silas will attend The Apprentice School at Newport News to pursue electrical studies, with plans to return to Botetourt County and one day open his own electrical business.

These students represent the future of our community, and we are incredibly proud to support them as they take their next steps forward. Congratulations again to Madeline, Gavin, and Silas!

Yesterday, we were honored to attend BTEC’s Signing Day program, where Chamber Board Member and Scholarship Committee Representative Maiya Ashby officially presented our first scholarship of the year to Ms. Madeline Rutledge of James River High School.

Madeline’s accomplishments are already incredibly impressive. In addition to graduating from JRHS, she has also received her cosmetology license, and she has big plans for the future. Madeline will attend the University of Lynchburg as she pursues her goal of creating a salon specifically designed to better serve individuals with disabilities.

We are deeply inspired by Madeline’s vision, compassion, and determination to use her talents to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. We have no doubt her future is incredibly bright, and we cannot wait to see all that she accomplishes.

Yesterday was a perfect morning to celebrate a truly special milestone with a Ribbon Cutting for The Hive at Mountain Thyme Honey & Gifts, LLC!

What owner-operator Sarah Melendy has built through Mountain Thyme has been incredibly thoughtful from the very beginning. By focusing on high-quality products, education, intentional growth, and genuine connection, she has cultivated far more than a business, she has built a community rooted in wellness, friendship, and support.

Nearly 50 guests joined us to celebrate this exciting next chapter, including representatives from the Greater Roanoke and NRV SBDC, Visit Virginia's Blue Ridge, Virginia is for Lovers , Botetourt County Economic Development, Botetourt County, Roanoke Regional Chamber & the Botetourt County Chamber of Commerece.

During the event, Sarah was also presented with the 2025 Small Business of the Year Award by the Greater Roanoke & NRV Small Business Development Center team — a well-deserved recognition of the heart, hard work, innovation, and impact behind Mountain Thyme’s continued growth and success.

It was a wonderful reminder of what can happen when small business, tourism, economic development, and community partnerships all work hand in hand.
