For decades, Gloria Steinem used her voice, writing, and organizing to advocate for women’s equality and help expand what women could imagine, ask for, and build.
Today, we honor her life and the generations of women whose work continues to move us forward.

The writer and activist Gloria Steinem died Wednesday, at 92. With her writing, her community organizing, and her partnerships, Steinem remained at the forefront of the feminist movement for more than 60 years. In 2015, Jane Kramer profiled Steinem for The New Yorker. “I’m an entrepreneur of social change,” Steinem told Kramer. “I raise money. I talk. I write. I tell stories. Translation and cultural adaptation are not the same thing, and the difference matters.

Translation focuses on accurately transferring a message from one language to another. Cultural adaptation, or what we call transcreation, goes further by considering tone, context, references, and the way a message will be understood by its audience.

At COOL, we do both. Because a message can be technically accurate and still miss the mark if it doesn’t connect with the people you’re trying to reach.

The right words matter. So does the way they are received.
