As we experience some incredible fall weather it is critical to understand the importance of being properly prepared for immersion.

Sure, no one hits the water expecting to get wet but it happens. As we move farther into fall, the consequences become increasingly serious.

Pro Tips:
1. Know your gear & test it. Dress appropriately. For the enthusiast paddle a solid layering system, shown below, can be easily assembled and provide decent protection for a short term solution.
2. Know your ability level, limits & venue. Consider routes closer to shore than in the heat of summer. Always know where you can bail out if necessary. A tight, conservative paddle route is critical in fall paddling!
3. Know your crew. Don’t paddle alone and be confident that your paddling crew has the ability & skills for safe, timely & effective rescue skills. Make sure everyone is clear on route, plan and expectations. Ideally paddle in groups of three minimum to ensure that Isla something happens, the resources are available to deal with a situation.

The paddling can be great in October but the stakes are high if you are unprepared or overestimate skill. Be safe, have fun and recognize the risk!

You need the right gear for any sport, including paddling. Wearing the right life jacket and other equipment that is designed for your particular type of water recreational activity can make your time in and on the water even more fun, so .

It’s been quiet at the OPA International Headquarters……Covid, problems with the SBA EIDL advances and getting bills paid have resulted in us backing away from what we are best at and working a ‘normal’ job for the time being. It’s sad but a necessity right now.

Despite the changes with One Planet Adventures we are still doing great work when we can. Case and point is our recent partnership with the Minnesota Historical Society & Forest History Center in Grand Rapids, MN. After re-opening this spring the Forest History Center was expanding interpretive programs along the Mississippi River. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the leadership & staff to provide an ACA: Canoe - Kayak - SUP - Raft - Rescue River Kayak Day Trip Leader Assessment. As you can see below, we put everyone to the test with instruction, guiding skills and rescues! Great job to all involved!

Without Dave, our work & partnership with the Ozark National Scenic Riverways & Ozark Riverways Foundation would never have grown to be what it is today. Without a doubt some of the most dedicated paddlesports instructors have come from these workshops!
