What a great time I had in Colorado hunting with ! After 17 years of waiting I cashed in points and decided to go have some fun on a hunt. I had no clue what I was getting into, and Colorado sure was different, but thankfully I was given some great words of wisdom by many friends. Arriving several days early to scout produced plenty of deer but no rut action at all! It was overwhelming trying to cover country and wonder what the next spot held. and I looked over miles and miles of country and found pockets of some decent deer but nothing that got me really excited. Opening morning came without much other than trying to help a local youth hunter kill a buck she had seen. (I hope she got him)
That afternoon we decided to move up to higher country in hopes of finding some more mature deer. At about 1:30 in the afternoon we were glassing and a tree was spotted shaking like crazy about 2 miles away. After about 10 minutes the buck that was causing all the chaos stepped out and and Payden and I looked at each other and knew we had found a special deer. The next two and a half days of hunting this buck we’re some of the most frustrating day’s of hunting I’ve ever experienced. Every time, just when we thought we had him he would take off on a dead run for the trees, while all the other deer kept feeding etc. He hated the sun and really only moved when it was not on him. After two and a half days of watching this buck do things that we’re almost unexplainable, I set up in his bedroom hoping his guard would drop with the does he was hanging around. Like a script he popped out when another buck started messing with the does and the rest is history. One quick shot at 435 yards and I turned into complete jello! “Chief” was down! I dreamed of putting my hands on a heavy ol muley for a long time and it finally happened. I was humbled hunting this deer and even more humbled by all the words of encouragement and help from family and friends. Thank You! for making the long trip up and for grinding it out. Time to put down a big ol coues!
