In the past, I have spoken about the spectrum of care and the importance of making veterinary care accessible to all pets and their owners.

While I am not a veterinarian, I have worked in a large private equine hospital prior to starting Amwell Data Services, so I do have some industry knowledge and experience.

Does that mean that I advise and coach other practices on best medicine? Heck no!

My role as an independent lab consultant is to support and guide practices to make sure they're getting tested most from the lab services in the way THEY want to practice medicine. It's not my role to advise veterinarians or practices on the how to practice medicine.

Let's talk about Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDLs)

VDLs are typically operated within colleges or universities across the country. These institutes are smaller than most commercial vendors but often offer a large testing menu, and sometimes more niche or specialized testing, too.

On one hand, a VDL may not cover all the lab testing requirements of your practice, BUT you are not required to commit to minimum spend requirements (unlike many commercial lab vendors).

So why are VDLs not used more frequently?

For some practices, this might be a workflow convenience. For example, if you are sending all your samples to one lab vendor and then only a couple of specific tests to a VDL, this might reduce the efficiency of the protocols already in place.

Other practices might be concerned with VDL pricing, which may not be as low as some commercial lab vendors, and workflow gaps getting results seamlessly into the PIMS.

If you had the choice, would you work with VDLs over commercial lab vendors?

Reviewing and evaluating lab agreements can be a very overwhelming and daunting task (trust me, you're preaching to the choir here) 😅

As a veterinary lab consultant, I want to share some helpful hints and tips to help you avoid making some common mistakes.

#️⃣1️⃣ Understanding the "Required Minimum Spend" - With most commercial lab vendors, you will be required to spend 'X' amount of money (this figure will vary) with the vendor over a year. Not ALL vendor purchases will apply (like SNAP tests at Idexx). This is something you that you MUST pay attention to otherwise you may end up writing a check to your lab vendor to make up the difference!

#️⃣2️⃣ Accepting default agreements - Negotiating a lab contract can be a lengthy process that spans over weeks, even months, but it's worth it!

#️⃣3️⃣ Accepting default pricing - The pricing of lab tests can fluctuate significantly depending on which commercial lab vendor you ask (specifically for reference lab testing). Until the commercial vendors change their pricing models, advocate for better pricing!

Comment below and let know if you have made any of these mistakes with your lab agreements!

VMX 2024 is upon us! Thinking about investing in some new lab or imaging equipment or renegotiating your lab contract with another vendor?

Don't forget to book a consult with your lab contract bestie to make sure the offer is the best fit for your practice 😉 We also have a board-certified veterinary radiologist available to provide expert, independent guidance for practices looking for imaging equipment.

The VetPartners 2024 Annual Conference is only a few days away. I joined in 2023, and this will be my first VetPartners conference. Inefficiency is something I have spoken about a LOT in my content, and I am excited to hear more details about the VetPartners Utilization Task Force and its resources to help practices leverage different tools to increase efficiency!

Looking forward to meeting and in person!

Happy New Year, everybody! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and that you are ready to take on this new year. For 2024, here are changes I want to see happen within the veterinary diagnostic market:

1️⃣ Flat rate pricing regardless of testing volume or practice size
2️⃣ More vendor competition and better tests for in-house diagnostic labs
3️⃣ Automatically capped/froze prices if practices are "in contract" without any extra price increases throughout the term

What do you want to change about the vet lab market in 2024? Comment below!

Today we are wrapping up for the holiday and we just wanted to remind you that you deserve to rest and take care of yourself.

With winter in full swing and a new year upon us, make sure to take some time to rest and recharge.

Happy Holidays everyone 🎄

"Thank you"

Such a simple gesture that can have a huge impact...

I want to thank all the veterinary practices and vet techs out there who are working day in and day out to provide the best care for their patients - and the clients who have put their trust in me to negotiate their lab contracts this year!

Coming from a senior kitty owner who has had multiple visits this year 😅

But seriously, thank you for all you do 🧡

It's that time of year...when new pricing schedules arrive in the mail or your inbox. How do you handle these rate increases?

Four main things to do (and always keep an eye on!):
1 - Update pricing in PIMS, preferably using a compliance-sensitive, cost-based pricing approach, not umbrella multipliers (e.g., 2.5x cost) since they can easily underestimate your true costs.
2 - Evaluate what goes where - Does it make more $ense to send certain tests out now, or is it better for the workflow and bottom line to bring them in-house?
3 - Continue to improve client compliance by building client education, growing client relationships, and increasing access to care (see and )
4 - Negotiate pricing with your lab vendor where and when you can.
