Seven power plants in Texas have closed and been shuttered. We have a diminishing supply of electricity, in a state where high demand continues to ratchet up, as 300,000 people move here each year. These higher prices are obvious to everyone who has shopped the electricity rates in the last 18 to 24 months.
Most experts and analysts firmly agree that Texas commercial electricity will ratchet up to 6.5 cents per kilowatt by summer of 2020, and continue moving higher to 7 to 7 1/2 cents per kilowatt by summer of 2021. They believe there will likely be 5 to 6 grid overloads, when unprotected adjustable rate users will pay nine dollars (yes dollars) per kilowatt for short durations during the summer.
By September 2021 predictions are that electricity will begin working its way slowly back down from 7 1/2 cents over 5 years to 5 cents per kilowatt again for small commercial users. Through additional sourcing and renewable Energy and possible new power plants, expectations are that rates will be down to 4 1/2 cents or lower by March 2026.
These higher price projections require more strategic thinking between now and 2026; new ideas and terms and not the same short term contract planning.
