Here’s a recent playground we installed. It was wet, but we got it done and it turned out great!

Tree planting season is in full swing. Remember to plant your trees now so that roots will be developing during the winter. When spring arrives, they will be ready to flourish. Today we are planting Nellie R. Stevens hollies. If you are looking for a great screening tree or just a dense evergreen background, the Nellie R. Stevens holly is a great choice.

All ornamental plants benefit from mulching when it’s done correctly.

Good mulching:

conserves soil moisture
prevents the soil surface from being crust
maintains moreideal soil temperatures
minimizes soil temperature fluctuations
reduces w**d seed germination and subsequent growth
prevents splashing soil fungus during irrigation / rain
lessens cold damage
slows soil erosion
reduces soil compaction
adds aesthetic beauty to the landscape

Mulch annual bedding plants and herbaceous perennials to a depth of 1 inch, shrubs to a depth of 2 inches and trees to a depth of 3-4 inches. It is important to remember to “go out” instead of “go up” with mulch – spread mulch horizontally instead of piling it vertically.

We continue to see problems with excessive mulching around trees and shrubs – a practice that is becoming more common by home gardeners and professional landscapers alike. Research has shown that mulching deeper than 4 inches is not healthy for most landscape plants. One of the tendencies in landscapes now is to make piles of mulch – sometimes resembling the shape of a volcano or fire ant mound – around the bases of shrubs and trees. It is very common around crape myrtles.

Problems from over-mulching or piling mulch around the base of plants:

starving the shallow roots of oxygen
kills phloem tissue that moves nutrients through the plant
more fungal / bacterial infections due to increased moisture
heat buildup from mulch decomposition damages the stem
influence pH of underlying soil
microbs compete with tree roots for nutrition
rodents living in and feeding on plants
termite infestations (especially when wood is used)

MULCH CORRECTLY!

Irrigation systems need to be turned off. If you have a separate meter or shut off for your irrigation system, don't forget to turn it off. We have continually cold weather coming for the next week. When the temperature drops below freezing and stays in freezing range, it can create a leak if you are not prepared.
