e to fashion designer Billy Reid, to the “Muscle Shoals Sound” that gave rise to so much popular American music, and to artists and creative people of all types. Phase 3️⃣: Product Design Meets Reality

Welcome to Phase 3 of the product development journey — where design becomes real. 🔧✍🏼 We finalize product design, complete full CAD engineering packages, kick off tooling, and handle every detail from pre-production to factory visits.
I travel to the factory to catch issues early, make last-minute adjustments, and ensure everything’s ready for full-scale manufacturing.

This is where ideas become products. This is where it all comes together. 🚀

Behind the Design: Inspired by Frank Gehry architecture, I wanted the Edgeware Electric Adjustable Knife Sharpener to have as few straight lines as possible. A thoughtful combination of arcs and curves make up the new-to-market adjustable sharpener. With this higher price point item I was able to push the manufacturing process and use stainless steel in a more unique way.

Whenever I’m designing a 🔌 product , I start with the actual layout of the electronics and work the design around all 6 sides of the components. I’ll sketch directly over a print of the electronics working out all details before starting CAD. 🤙🏼

⚙️The Process of Prototypes⚙️ A Functional Prototype is typically produced during my Phase 2.

✔️ After initial concepts have been presented to clients, I’ll do another round of sketching to make adjustments or improvements to the selected concepts. In this phase we what to have functional details in the prototype, so I use to complete the files for prototyping.

✔️ Once I have the prototypes in hand, I’ll process the material with extra sanding or polishing, painting or in this case - clear coating. I want the material to perform as close to a production piece as possible.

✔️ I test…look for ways to improve, then repeat until we reach the intended performance.

🍕Design Insight : Pizza Peel Sketches, Renderings, Prototypes, & Production.

🍕We helped our good friends at Epicurean design and develop their Pizza Peel. Comes in various sizes and is available at Williams-Sonama. 🤙🏼

🍕A must-have for sliding pizza in and out of a hot oven, the peel offers a sure grip and keeps your hands safely away from the heat. Doubles as a cutting and serving board for baked pizza.

🍕Today feels like a pizza kind of day around here. Cheers!

Travel CAD 🌏💻 If you’ve followed along for a while you may know this is one of my favorite places to work in the world. The club level. A quiet spot while bouncing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

⚙️ In only two full days (so far) in the factory, we’ve managed to shave months off project timelines for many products.

💫 These are really long days and late nights, but it’s so rewarding to see huge tables full of products that we have developed or are in development. With lots of testing and refining, and testing again. 🤙🏼

Behind the Design : Long hours in the studio this week preparing for factory visits. We not only design the product, but work directly with our manufacturers in the factory to ensure production is correct and timelines are met.
