LUNAR RESEARCH STATION, FLORENCE MA - April 1, 2026 - In a discovery that is sure to sweeten the future of space exploration, researchers at the Galactic Agriculture Institute (G*I) announced today that they have successfully harvested the first-ever "Moon Cocoa.” The team managed to grow healthy Theobroma cacao in 100% simulated lunar regolith, or "moon dirt."
"We always knew astronauts would need more than just oxygen to survive," said Dr. Ganache, lead researcher for the lunar project.
The breakthrough came when scientists discovered that the sharp, glass-like texture of lunar soil, while typically stressful for most plants, actually provides the "ultimate drainage" for cacao. Dr. Ganache stated that the team’s initial experiments were bittersweet with CCN-51 showing little to no success while the heirloom varietals thrived. Plans are underway to fully scale heirloom cacao by mid-July in a lunar-based, low gravitational environment.
