Why most companies hire for skills but fire for culture — and what to do about it ....
Most hiring decisions are made on competence.
Most firing decisions are made on character.
I've seen it play out more times than I can count. A candidate aces every technical interview. Their resume is immaculate. References check out. Six months later, they're gone — and the team is relieved.
The truth is, skills can be taught. Culture alignment is far harder to retrofit.
So why do so many companies still treat values as a nice-to-have in the interview process?
Here's what we recommend to every hiring manager we work with:
→ Define your values in behavioural terms, not vague adjectives
→ Build specific interview questions that surface how candidates have lived those values
→ Make culture-add (not culture-fit) part of every scorecard
→ Include a team member in the final stage — someone who'll work with this person daily
The goal isn't to hire people who think like everyone else. It's to hire people who share your standards for how you treat each other, your clients, and your work.
Skills will get someone through the door. Values determine whether they stay.
