October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Most posts on this topic will tell you to use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication. You already know that.
The four gaps we are actually seeing put businesses at risk right now:

1. MFA that is not covering everything -- not just email, but EHR portals, billing systems, and remote access tools
2. Phishing training that is two years out of date -- while attackers use AI to generate emails your staff will not recognize
3. Patch management that depends on someone remembering -- which means devices go unpatched for weeks
4. Vendor access granted during implementation and never reviewed again

None of these are hard to fix. All of them are easier to fix now than after an incident.

You get a call. It's your IT provider. There's a security issue on your network and they need remote access to fix it immediately. Except it wasn't your IT provider.

Fake IT support scams are surging — and they're particularly dangerous because they impersonate the exact people businesses trust to keep them safe. Once an attacker has remote access to your system, the damage can be swift and severe.

Here's what to watch for:

🔴 Unsolicited calls or emails from anyone claiming to be IT support
🔴 Urgent requests to install remote access software
🔴 Pressure to act immediately before the "problem gets worse"
🔴 Requests for login credentials to "diagnose the issue"
🔴 Callers who already know basic details about your business or systems

Never grant remote access or share credentials based on an unsolicited call or email — even if they sound legitimate. Hang up and call your IT provider directly using a number you already have on file.
