ROAR’s Black History Month Factoid :

On this historic month, ROAR honors
Mrs. Shirley Chisholm!
Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Barbadian parents on November 30th, 1924. Chisholm spent part of her childhood in Barbados with her grandmother. She graduated from Brooklyn College in 1946 and earned a master’s degree in elementary education from Columbia University. Chisholm was the director of the Hamilton-Madison Child Care Center from 1953 to 1959. She became an educational consultant for New York City’s Bureau of Child Welfare from 1959 to 1964.
In 1968 Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman in Congress in which she served seven terms. She was one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1971. In a remarkable and historical move, Shirley Chisholm becomes the first African American woman to run for the highest office in the United States of America in 1972. Her platform was giving a voice to the people who were often ignored. She believed in equality and justice for all. Unfortunately, she did not win the election, but she left a lasting image on many individuals' minds. She paved the way for Barack Obama's, the first African-American to become president for Hillary Clinton, finally Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman to become Vice President of the United States.

ROAR’s Black History Month Factoid :

Mrs. Karen Washington is an advocate for growing foods. Your body is your temple, and what sustenance you put into it matters. Mrs. Washington is one of the 100 black influential leaders (power 100), as per Ebony Magazine. Yes, we all agree🙌🏾

New York Native Mrs. Karen Washington has dedicated decades of her life advocating for justice in the food system. It has promoted urban farming as a means of generating access to fresh local food for New Yorkers. Karen has been involved in various organizations that promote food justice, including Just Food, Farm School NYC, Black Urban Growers (which she co-founded), and NYC Community Gardens Coalition. Karen owns and operates Rise & Root Farm, a cooperatively run organic farm in Orange County.

Professionally Karen was a Physical Therapist for over 30 years, and she "retired" in April 2014 to start Rise & Root Farm.
“To grow your food gives you power and dignity. You know exactly what you’re eating because you grew it. It’s good, it’s nourishing, and you did this for yourself, your family, and your community.” Karen Washington

ROAR’s Black History Month Factoid :

ROAR’s ownership is 100%; Black-owned and 75% black women ownership. Black women since antiquity have always been the Black family's foundation. We must salute Black women and protect them.

A true visionary, Dr. Patricia Bath became the first female African American medical doctor to receive a medical patent when she invented a laser cataract treatment device called a Laserphaco Probe in 1986. (Bath was also the first African American to complete a residency in ophthalmology.) The co-founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness patented her invention in 1988.

ROAR’s Black History Month Food Safety Factoid :

Alfred L. Cralle was an African American businessman and inventor who was best known for inventing the ice cream scoop in 1897. Cralle was born on September 4, 1866, in Kenbridge, Lunenburg County, Virginia, just after the end of the American Civil War. He attended local schools and worked for his father in the carpentry trade as a young man. During that period, he also became interested in mechanics.
Cralle was sent to Washington D.C. where he attended Wayland Seminary, a branch of the National Theological Institute, one of a number of schools founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society immediately after the Civil War to help educate newly freed African Americans.
After attending the school for a few years, Cralle moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a porter at a drugstore and at a hotel. While working at the hotel, he developed the idea of the ice cream scoop. It came to him when he noticed ice cream servers having difficulty trying to get the popular confection desired by the customer into the cone they were usually holding. The ice cream tended to stick to spoons and ladles, usually requiring the server to use two hands and at least two separate implements to serve customers.
Cralle responded to that problem by creating a mechanical device now known as the ice cream scoop. He applied for and received a patent on February 2, 1897. The thirty-year-old was granted U.S. Patent #576395.
Cralle’s invention, originally called an Ice Cream Mold and Disher, was designed to be able to keep ice cream and other foods from sticking. It was easy to operate with one hand. Since the Mold and Disher was strong and durable, effective, and inexpensive, it could be constructed in almost any desired shape, such as cone or a mound, with no delicate parts that could break or malfunction.
