Public Storage and Solar Landscape are teaming up on 60 rooftop community solar projects in northern Illinois, 44 MW total in ComEd territory over the next two years.

ComEd’s CEO notes these projects help close the supply-demand gap and deliver bill savings, with the utility expecting ~400 community solar sites by year-end. The deal is backed by Illinois’ CEJA and CRGA policies, is projected to support 300 construction jobs, and includes strong local workforce training partnerships. Public Storage is also expanding its industry-leading solar program toward 1,300 properties by the end of 2026.

Commercial rooftops as ready-made energy infrastructure — that’s a model worth watching.

The Solar Industry Continues to Evolve.

Gibraltar Industries has sold Terrasmart's solar racking and foundations business to Unirac, another sign of the industry's ongoing growth and consolidation. As manufacturers expand their capabilities, the result can be stronger product offerings, increased innovation, and more comprehensive solutions for commercial solar projects.

At Accord Power, we follow industry developments like these because they help shape the technologies and partnerships that move renewable energy forward. We've put together a brief summary here on our Accord Power Newsletter (https://accordpower.com/news/) and encourage you to read Billy Ludt's original article in Solar Power World for the complete story.

☀️ Plug-in Solar is Coming to New Jersey... What Does That Mean for the Solar Industry?

New Jersey is moving toward allowing plug-in solar systems for balconies, patios, and apartments, making solar more accessible than ever.

Will this compete with traditional rooftop solar—or create new opportunities for homeowners, renters, and professional installers?

In this week's newsletter, I share my perspective on why this may actually help grow the solar industry rather than disrupt it.

Did you know over 92% of commercial rooftops in New Jersey still sit unused for clean energy generation? ☀️🏢

Recent research highlighted by Solar Power World reveals an extraordinary opportunity hiding in plain sight: New Jersey alone holds roughly 17.5 gigawatts of untapped commercial rooftop solar potential. That’s massive capacity sitting right above our heads—ready to generate clean power without using a single acre of new land.

For commercial property owners, going solar is no longer just a sustainability statement—it’s a powerful hedge against volatile energy markets and a way to lock in predictable, long-term operating costs.

3 Key Takeaways for Business Leaders:
🔹 Untapped Potential: Commercial rooftops remain one of the Tri-State area’s largest underutilized assets.
🔹 Cost Predictability: Stabilizing long-term energy costs is driving rapid commercial adoption.
🔹 Plan Ahead: Early site evaluations are critical as utility interconnection timelines lengthen.

Every building's structural, electrical, and energy profile is unique. Before assuming your property isn't a candidate, a professional site evaluation is the best place to start.

Distributed Solar Saved New Yorkers $200M During the Early July Heat Wave.

Earlier this week, NYSERDA's President and CEO Doreen Harris did an on-air interview on Albany's Spectrum News PV station where she highlighted that distributed solar saved New Yorkers $200M during the early July heat wave.

Solar power delivers when the grid is under the most stress, helping lower electricity prices for everyone. That's what affordable, reliable energy looks like.

Don't take our word for it - check out this interview with the President and CEO fo New York's energy agency:

⚡ As New York City experiences rising electricity demand and higher utility costs, innovative energy storage solutions are becoming more important than ever.

One technology gaining momentum is the **plug-in battery**—a compact, easy-to-deploy energy storage system that can help reduce peak electricity demand, lower customer energy costs, and support a more resilient electric grid through Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs.

At Accord Power, we recently partnered with graduate students from NYU's School of Professional Studies on an in-depth Capstone research project exploring whether this emerging technology could play a meaningful role in New York City's residential energy future.

The findings were encouraging, highlighting the potential for plug-in batteries to:
🔋 Reduce dependence on carbon-intensive peaker plants
🏙️ Expand access to distributed energy resources for renters and multifamily housing
💡 Help customers lower peak-season electricity costs
⚙️ Strengthen grid reliability through demand response participation

As policies evolve and grid modernization continues, plug-in battery technology could become an important part of New York's clean energy transition.

**Energy resilience starts long before the next emergency.**

In the years following Superstorm Sandy, New York City began rethinking how critical public facilities could continue serving their communities during extended power outages.

Accord Power was proud to support the design and deployment of some of the city's earliest solar-plus-storage systems at four NYC public libraries. These projects helped establish libraries as community resilience centers—providing backup power for device charging, internet access, and critical information when the electric grid was unavailable.

Because battery energy storage was still an emerging technology at the time, these installations required close collaboration with agencies including FDNY, DOB, DCAS, and GOSR to help develop permitting pathways and safety standards that would influence future energy storage projects across the city.

Today, battery storage has become a key part of resilient energy planning, and we're proud that these early projects helped lay the groundwork for the solutions being deployed across New York and beyond.
