It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the loss of one of our own after a long courageous battle with cancer. Dan Owen served as a Firefighter and Line Officer for over 30yrs. He retired as a Career Lieutenant from Bishop International Airport Authority, Retired from Flushing Fire serving as Captain, and finally serving as the rank of Firefighter for Grand Blanc City Fire. Dan’s passion and expertise for the fire service was proudly shared and was as contagious as his positive attitude and never ending smile.

Fire Service Personnel wishing to Honor Captain Owen at his Funeral Mass: Walkthrough will proceed following Mass at St. Roberts Catholic Church beginning at 1100hrs Monday December 23rd. If a municipality would like to bring an apparatus also, a procession will take place after Mass and will lead to the Cemetery. If interested please reach out to Captain Clements @810-449-5249 so we can get a headcount and parking space if need be.

Our sincere condolences go out to Dan’s family and friends.

Tonight was bittersweet for your Flushing Firefighters as we celebrated the retirement and proclamation by Mayor Karlichek, of our Battalion Chief Michael Badder. Being a lifelong, and current resident of Flushing, Chief Badder began with the Department March 13th of 1984 as an entry level On-Call Firefighter at the age of 18. He was promoted to Lieutenant on August 25th of 1993. Through many years of experience and training not limited to the operations level of HAZMAT, All pertinent levels of National Incident Management System, countless hours of mandatory monthly trainings, mentoring fellow and incoming firefighters, his commitment to this community and his department was always evident. He was promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief February 1st of 2001. Chief Badder was selected in the past by members of the Department as Firefighter of the year. He also served as Quartermaster for the Department ensuring all personnel were outfitted correctly and thoroughly with PPE. Chief Badder was always known as an aggressive interior firefighter and had considerable knowledge he was sure to share with new members looking to perfect the craft. Chief Badder was known more formally around the Department as “Mother” for multiple reasons.
The Fire Service is full of old traditions and one that is often generational. Chief Badder’s father, Floyd Badder, as well as his brother Jon Badder also served and still serve respectively with the Flushing Fire Department.
Thank you for your Leadership, Dedication, and your Passion for 40yrs Chief, you will be greatly missed!! Enjoy your retirement as you’ve certainly earned it.

Michael Badder

Each year your Flushing Firefighters take a vote to decide our Firefighter of the year. To earn votes, we look at fireground incidents, performance around the station, and a very important but often unseen to the public, civic duties. We are pleased and proud to announce our 2023 Firefighter of the Year, Firefighter/EMT Danielle Smith. Danielle is a crucial member of our department as a Firefighter, Engineer, and serving in our new EMS division. What most citizens will never see is the behind the scenes work she does to ensure we have successful civic events such as our Annual Easter egg hunt, gathering donations for our Halloween open house, and although not a Fire Department related event she has spearheaded Movies in the Park for many years, guaranteed if there is an event put on by the Fire Department, Danielle is involved in some way each and every time. Please join us in Congratulating Firefighter/EMT Smith on her accomplishments and earning Firefighter of the Year!!
