When a team isn't meeting expectations, one of the first questions I ask is pretty simple: Do they know what the expectations are?

We sometimes get frustrated when people don't meet a standard we've never clearly communicated, or when we've allowed something for so long that it has quietly become the standard.

If something matters, say it.

And if you say it matters, be consistent enough to mean it.

Every once in a while someone asks me about the tools I actually use, so here's one.

I've used the Full Focus Planner for years.

What has kept me coming back isn't really the planner itself. It's the discipline of deciding what matters before the day starts deciding for you.

And with the final quarter of the year beginning, this is actually a great time to start thinking about 2027. Not necessarily setting goals yet, but paying attention. What's working? What isn't? What needs to change? What do you want more of next year?

Giving yourself a few months to think about those questions means you can walk into January with alignment rather than urgency.

Spending some time around history has a way of making you think about leadership and the qualities that stand the test of time.

I think experience does the same thing.

Earlier in my career, I probably paid more attention to confidence, decisiveness and how well someone could command a room.

These days, I notice different things.

Can they admit when they're wrong?
Do they listen before they answer?
Are people better after spending time with them?

The longer I lead, the more I believe character has a way of outlasting charisma.

This article features Jennifer Edwards, someone I've had the privilege of working with, and thought it was worth sharing resharing.

We tend to think of workplace drama as something relatively harmless. But Jennifer makes an interesting point about why we're drawn into it in the first place, and what participating in it can quietly do to trust and collaboration.

A good reminder that culture isn't only shaped by the big decisions leaders make.

It's shaped by the conversations we choose to participate in, too.

As more companies return to IRL offices, the amount of gossip is likely to increase.

As another school year gets underway, I'm especially thankful for those in my family and close circle who have dedicated their lives to education.

Watching them over the years, reminds me that knowledge has very little value if we keep it to ourselves.

One of the greatest responsibilities we have as leaders is to invest in those coming behind us.

A mentor once told me, "Be a river, not a reservoir."

Don't just accumulate wisdom.
Pass it on.

And lead in a way that's worth following.

Leadership is important.
Business is important.

But at the end of the day, the people we love are the reason we work so hard in the first place.

As another summer comes to a close, I hope you've made time for both.

The meetings will always be there.
The emails will still be waiting.

The moments with family are the ones that become memories.
Never sacrifice what matters most while pursuing what's merely important.

As summer begins to wind down, I'm reminded that every season has something to teach us.

Some seasons stretch us.
Some restore us.
Some prepare us for what's next.

Whatever season you're in today, trust that God is still at work.
Often, the greatest growth is happening where we can't yet see it.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us: "He has made everything beautiful in its time."
