💧 Water Safety Tips

• Never leave children unattended, even for a few seconds
• Designate a “water watcher” who isn’t distracted by phones or conversations
• Avoid swimming alone, especially in deeper water
• Keep life jackets or flotation devices nearby (especially for weaker swimmers)
• Know where rescue equipment is (life ring, pole, etc.)
• Stay away from drains and suction outlets
• No running near the pool—wet surfaces get slippery fast

⚠️ Medical Emergencies to Watch For

🌡️ Heat Exhaustion / Heat Stroke
• Signs: dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating (or no sweating), confusion
• Action: move to shade, hydrate, cool down immediately—call 911 if symptoms worsen

❤️ Heart Attack
• Signs: chest pain/pressure, shortness of breath, pain in arm/jaw/back
• Action: call 911 immediately—don’t wait

🫁 Drowning / Near-Drowning
• Signs: struggling to stay above water, gasping, silent distress
• Action: remove from water, call 911, begin CPR if needed

⚡ Electrical Hazards (around pools)
• Never use plugged-in devices near water
• Be aware of pool lighting or equipment issues

Last Sunday, MICU 579A, MEDIC 500, and the Garrettford-Drexel Hill Fire Co. responded to the 200 block of Burmont Rd for a person choking. The man, being home alone, ran out into the street and got the attention of a bystander. This unknown bystander recognized the man was choking and performed back blows and abdominal thrusts until EMS arrived. Paramedic Erin McCardle, EMT Jen Smith, and Chief Ron Berardocco arrived on scene. The patient was lowered to the ground, and paramedics removed a large piece of meat wedged in his airway with a McGrath video laryngoscope and McGill forceps. An amazing job by this unknown bystander who saved this man’s life by recognizing, taking action, and activating EMS!
