I woke up to the news of a friends passing. He was my age. I will always remember his smile and laughter. He lit up every room he walked into, and always - and I truly mean always - treated everyone like they mattered. Just a spectacular human living life to the fullest.
This type of news jars you back into reality. You'd think I would understand that after the last two years of significant loss and change I have experienced.
But it's easy to slip back into thinking there's always tomorrow. Tomorrow to get started on that big project. Tomorrow to tell someone you love them. Tomorrow to make a difference in the world. The reality is - you have the choice to start now. Right now. You don't have to take a big step. Just take the first step!
I'm now more determined than ever to finish the current book and course I am working on with the working title "No Time to Waste".
Whether in our personal or professional lives, we take on too much and the present becomes a blur. We take people for granted. We don't appreciate the moments where things go spectacularly well. We don't notice the sunset or the flowers. We don't notice the person who just needs a smile or someone to listen. All while anxiety and depression are growing at exponential rates.
We don't take time to just breathe. You see, the answers we need in life are often found in the stillness. The silence we don't afford ourselves.
We wear busy like it's a badge of honor. I know I did for decades. In reality, we are often doing things that don't matter. We check them off the list but they don't move the needle in any particular direction.
So hug your family. Tell your co-workers how much you appreciated them. Look at the flowers. And just breathe! You are in this world to make a difference with every human interaction you have. It's your choice what that interaction looks like. Do you lift people up or tear them down?
Be the difference someone else needs today. You will be amazed how much it fills your soul with joy.
I will let you know when the book is done!
