The Montgomery County Dept of History & Archives, formed in 1934, is a genealogical & local history library with an archival collection including original records dating back to 1772. As someone once stated ,"the Montgomery County Department of History & Archives is internationally renowned for the archival collection it maintains and the accuracy of the research it is willing to undertake within that collection." The Department of History & Archives has three areas that serve as its principal functions: (1) local history/genealogy library, (2) archives, and (3) records management. · Serves as local history resource for County residents, public historians, media, and patrons researching family history -- average 1700 visitors annually from all over the world· Conducting historical / genealogical research from queries (i.e. written requests, email, telephone, etc.)· Cataloging & preservation of items of historical significance to Montgomery County (and its predecessor Tryon County) including thousands of original county court records dating back to 1700s· Maintains physical and intellectual control (storage, inventory & prepare for destruction after recommended retention period) over 2,300 cubic feet of inactive records created by various County departments · Educates public on events in county that impacted culture / society / industry / transportation / education, etc.
