💡We strongly recommend multiple careers, simultaneously. Here’s why:
1. You should always have a backup plan. In today’s business cycles, layoffs are too common. It is highly unlikely you’ll go your entire career without being impacted by a reduction in force, restructuring or some other corporate buzz word. Your second career might not be as lucrative as your first but it’s nice to have a little safety net.
2. You learn new skills & gain variety. Typically second careers are a departure from your first, they are often an outlet for other skills and interests, maybe a creative outlet? Either way, it is an excellent way to learn new skills you apply across all your careers and keep yourself from getting bored by offering variety.
3. Entrepreneurial development. Second careers tend to be more entrepreneurial and allow you to start to develop a leadership mindset where you think like an owner.
When we see second careers on resumes or LinkedIn that is actually a bonus. I know I’m talking to someone that is bringing a unique level of experience and grit with a passion for personal & professional growth.
Any employer who looks at second careers like a liability or wants you to do nothing but give them 1000% blindly, while they can’t give you the same level of unwavering commitment, is not worthy of your exceptional expertise.
