I know I’ve been quiet on here this week but it’s been a busy week working on a greenhouse project that involves cutting into a hillside to create a terrace for the greenhouse plus a thermal battery system. I’m almost done with the retaining walls. The project took a lot of work and planning with the owner to bring a mental vision to reality in a location which slopes more than it looks and in 2 different directions.

Spent the last 2 days working up in the mountains creating a pad for a camping trailer so the owner has a nice view from his new office. It was harder finding a dump truck driver willing to brave the logging road up there but Mory at Herb Hill Farms was just the man for the job. Then yesterday we went and picked up the trailer and hauled it up and got it in position. One particularly steep spot I had to use the skid steer to help pull the truck to help with traction. Once we got it in place I had to drag the back end of the truck sideways to get it out from in front of the trailer because there wasn’t enough room to maneuver and get over.

Spent some time today working on some maintenance. My dump trailer ramps were starting to bend in the middle from the weight of my equipment so I picked up some scrap plate from a local fab shop and reinforced the sides. Plus I got a new attachment for the skid steer for moving trailers.

Nope, that’s not a broken bucket, that’s about the best, most used attachment I’ve purchased for my excavator. So useful for grading, culvert cleanup or digging, hillside work, or sloped and uneven terrain.

Had an adventurous day today. It can be risky going blind into thick brush and not knowing what you’re going to find. Besides the normal hazards like abandoned rigging cables, sometimes you find a hole. Today I found both. Going down a hill and suddenly it got a lot steeper. I stopped right away but it was already too steep to back up. Just kept spinning tracks. Fortunately I had my excavator there and was able to check the ground in front of it to see if I could safely just continue down the hill then help dig it out of mud at the bottom.

Started on a fire break, mulching job today. Creating a nice open area to access the creek running through this property and also knocking down all the brush fuel and blackberry bushes. Also had to deal with some left behind land mines that always make this kind of work hard on the machinery. Fortunately I was using the carbide teeth and not the blades or the blades would have been done for. 1-1/4” cable, probably 100’ long and a 12’ 1/4x1” flat bar. All got wrapped around the drum.

I took a quick, one-day project yesterday clearing out a spot for a shed/carport. Demolished the old shed and cleared away the debris and top soil, put down w**d barrier and rocked and compacted.

Finished the project and pulled the equipment out today. 210’ of retaining wall along the orchard and the house. The homeowner originally wanted a straight wall but once I laid it out we found there were a couple of things we had to work around. If I kept it running parallel to the house, it wouldn’t terminate at the driveway split and if I ran it straight from the driveway split then the end of it would be way lower in the yard. So I laid it out parallel with the house up to the driveway and then turned to line up with the driveway split. Then there was the issue of the large tree next to the house. We didn’t want to push the wall any farther towards the orchard but the wall would have only been 2’ away from the tree and would definitely interfere with the roots, so I introduced a radius around the base of the tree to keep the wall away from it.

I’m just about finished with my latest project. A little over 200’ of retaining wall plus some underground utility work and grading. I finished all but about 10’ of wall and with grading and washing the wall completed up to where I’m working. I expect to finish tomorrow.
