Our annual trail work and training weekend on the Grindstone 100-mile course is scheduled this year for August 12 & 13. This weekend is a great time to experience some of the Grindstone course, camp, eat/drink, get to know other runners, and, if you haven’t already, fulfill the entry requirement for 8hrs of trail work for 100-mile runners. We really enjoy this weekend in the mountains, but we have a capacity of 35, first come, first served, so don't delay in reserving your spot!
This year our weekend begins with trail work on Saturday, August 12 followed on Sunday with some magnificent running on part of the Grindstone course. New for this year, Stokesville Campground will be hosting our Saturday night camping. Everyone who plans to use the campground for overnight camping and showering will need to reserve a spot in advance. The campground has graciously allowed us a late checkout Sunday so that runners can gather their camping gear and grab a shower post-run. The nearby National Forest offers plenty of free camping if you would like to opt out of paying the campground fees.
Reservation for Stokesville Campground can be made here: http://stokesvillecampground.com/info/
Trail work will be organized in specific work groups according to needs/tools/number of people, etc. Please make sure to RSVP via the link below by Saturday, July 15 whether you are planning to attend both days or just one day. To RSVP, simply click this link https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScEK4G_171CMEY1J1kOCCGwPszEMF6e6KwLAus1bDiKMrKcTw/viewform and complete the questionnaire.
Of interest might be the following website which outlines many trail tools:
https://www.americantrails.org/resources/trail-tools-repair-and-sharpening . However, the most pertinent tools for working on the Grindstone course (this time of year) include: w**d cutters (grass-powered trimmer, w**d whacker, swing blade) & loppers. You will need to source your own tools & since the course is not in a wilderness area I strongly suggest the use of a gas-powered w**d cutter! Having the right tools is very important - moral support is nice but a gas-powered w**d eater is better!
