Hello!

ONRC is hosting a Rosmond Evening Talk on Thursday, April 25th at 7pm. Join us for a presentation from Cathy Salazar on traditional Quileute cedar basket weaving.

The art and process of making cedar bark baskets for both practical and decorative purposes have evolved over centuries. Cathy Salazar is enrolled in the Quileute Tribe. She has been weaving since 1997. Teachers have included Lillian Pullen, Norma Rodriguez, Sharon Pullen, Lela Mae Morganroth, Marian Schumack and Viola Riebe, although she has been influenced by many other weavers as well.

In this Evening Talk, she will briefly go over historic uses of cedar bark as it pertains to basket weaving, the process and timing of gathering red cedar in the spring, storage, and curing and preparing cedar to begin weaving baskets. Different styles, techniques and types of baskets will be presented along with many hands-on materials. Cedar basket weaving is an important element of the Quileute Tribal culture and is an active, living and evolving traditional resource.

Join us in-person in the Hemlock Forest Room at the Olympic Natural Resources Center at 1455 S. Forks Ave, Forks, WA. Or, listen via zoom using this link: https://washington.zoom.us/j/3834334539. Attached is a flyer with additional information. If you can't make it to the talk, you can always watch the recorded presentation later on the ONRC website here.

Come join us for another Evening Talk at the ONRC. Keep an eye on our page for more updates on future Evening Talks, current projects and more.

ONRC is hosting a Rosmond Evening Talk on Wednesday, February 28th at 7:30pm. Join us for a presentation by Don Anderson titled 'Toxic 'red tides' of Alexandrium catenella: an emerging, climate-driven threat to subsistence communities and ecosystems in the Pacific Arctic'.

The waters of western and northern Alaska, including the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort seas, are changing due to climate-driven warming, leading to an elevated risk of Alexandrium catenella blooms and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs). PSTs are a recognized health concern in southeastern Alaska, but the distribution, dynamics and impacts of A. catenella blooms in the northern waters of the region are largely unknown. This talk synthesizes six years of observations and analyses (2018-2023). Key findings include: 1) exceptionally large and dense accumulation zones (cystbeds) of dormant A. catenella cysts in US waters of the eastern Chukchi and eastern Bering Sea regions, with the combined size of these features and their cyst concentrations the highest reported globally; 2) evidence that climate-driven warming of surface and bottom waters can now support complete A. catenella life cycle progression in northern and eastern cystbeds in some years; and 3) observation of massive advected blooms from sub-Arctic Bering Sea waters through Bering Strait to the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. These findings highlight growing human health and food security threats to western and northern Alaskan ecosystems and subsistence communities through annually recurrent contamination of resources throughout the food web (e.g., shellfish, fish, tunicates, seabirds, marine mammals, and more).

Join us in-person in the Hemlock Forest Room at the Olympic Natural Resources Center at 1455 S. Forks Ave, Forks, WA. Or, listen via zoom using this link: https://washington.zoom.us/j/3834334539

ONRC Evening Talk, Tuesday, Aug. 15

The ONRC evening talk series is back with a presentation by the ONRC intern crew. Each year, ONRC hosts a summer field internship for students interested in topics such as forestry, ecology, social science, and environmental policy. Interns spend nine weeks living and working on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula and participate in a wide range of forest ecology and management experiments.

This year, five University of Washington undergraduate students have spent their summer working on several projects including the Type 3 Watershed Experiment, the long-term ecosystem productivity study, and the ethnoforestry field trials. Each project has allowed them to learn more about forest management, scientific study design, field measurements, and the big picture of how research connects to management.

They will be presenting an evening talk on their summer work, including details on each research site, the data collection process, and what they learned along the way. Please join us on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Hemlock Forest Conference Room, 1455 S. Forks Ave., or on Zoom at this link: https://washington.zoom.us/j/3834334539.

Our next Evening Talk is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 25th. We are fortunate to have Dr. Daniel Omdal, Forest Pathologist for Washington State Department of Natural Resources Wildfire Division. Join us at 7:00 pm in the ONRC’s Hemlock Forest Room for another great Evening Talk.

Title: Western Washington Forest Health with a Focus on the Decline of Bigleaf Maple.

As of the end of 2018, there has been no sign of recovery of sick and dying Bigleaf Maple though Western Washington. Forest pathologists at Washington’s DNR have been investigating the increase in symptoms and mortality in the Bigleaf Maple trees since 2011. Dr. Omdal will discuss the results of a recently completed Masters Project from the University of Washington, which investigated the spatial patterns and environmental variable associated with the decline.

An update on Swiss Needle Cast Disease and its impacts on Douglas-fir will also be provided during the Evening Talk.

Please join us for our first Evening Talk of 2019! Evening Talks at ONRC is funded through the Rosmond Forestry Education Fund, an endowment that honors the contributions of Fred Rosmond and his family to forestry and the Forks community.

Refreshments will be served and a potluck of your favorite dessert is encouraged.
