Interesting information. What is your experience? What are your favorite breeds and who are your LOCAL "go-to" people for these birds? Lets share a little local farm information.

The breed that lays 350 eggs a year is often done producing by year three. The breed that lays 250 a year is still going at ten. Picking a backyard layer by annual egg count alone misses the real math.

- Black Australorp — 250-300 eggs/year, lives 6-10 years. Gentle, quiet, cold-hardy. Dark plumage makes aerial predators mistake her for a crow.

- Barred Rock — 250 eggs/year, lives 8-12 years. Heritage breed that lays consistently for years, not just seasons. May still be producing at age ten.

- Buff Orpington — 200-280 eggs/year, lives 8-10 years. The gentlest breed most keepers own. Heavy, fluffy, often described as a lap chicken. Excellent broody mother.

- Rhode Island Red — 250-300 eggs/year, lives 5-8 years. Classic American farm chicken. Hardy, forages well, lays in all seasons. Dark brown eggs.

- Easter Egger — 200-280 eggs/year, lives 6-8 years. Blue, green, olive, or pink eggs. Not technically a breed — mixed chickens carrying the blue egg gene. Expect variation.

- ISA Brown — 300-350 eggs/year, lives 2-4 years. Highest annual layer and shortest-lived. A commercial hybrid bred to convert feed into eggs fast. The math: 350 × 3 years = 1,050 lifetime eggs. A Barred Rock at 250 × 10 = 2,500.

Lifetime production, temperament, and health matter more than the number on the hatchery page.

With all this rain the ground is completely saturated. It can’t hold any more water. As it continues to rain through the weekend, we are going to continue to have lots of standing water. This will likely lead to a mosquito explosion of biblical proportions!

First we have extended drought, and now it feels like the weather across North Georgia has shifted to endless rain. With the National Weather Service keeping multiple rounds of scattered thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall in our forecast through next Tuesday, we have a lot of standing water out there.
That means we are officially on a countdown to a major mosquito population explosion.
Those tiny pockets of water sitting in our yards? To an Asian Tiger mosquito (the main day-biting culprit around here), that’s a luxury honeymoon suite. It only takes a bottle-cap size amount of stagnant water for them to lay hundreds of eggs. Combined with our rising humidity and warm May temperatures, those eggs will transform into biting nuisances in less than a week.
Before our backyards and patios become total no-fly zones, let's do some collective community damage control. Every time we get a break in the rain, take 10 minutes to run the "Tip & Toss" patrol on your property:
Tip kiddie pools, flower pot saucers, tires, and outdoor toys.
Toss any yard debris or trash holding trapped water.
Clear out those clogged gutters—they are the ultimate hidden mosquito motels.
Refresh pet water bowls and birdbaths daily.
If it holds water for more than a few days, it’s a breeding ground. Stock up on your bug spray and check your window screens now, folks. We’re going to need it! 🛑 SWAT TEAM ASSEMBLE.

Proper chicken feed storage is essential to maintain its quality and nutritional value. Feed stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight has a shelf-life of approximately six months from manufacturing. Smaller packages, such as 12 lb bags or less, typically have a 9-12 months shelf-life be...
