Young at Heart Pottery

Young at Heart Pottery Bachelor's of Fine Art in Ceramics at UW-Whitewater. Diagnosed at the age of six, epilepsy and seizures have been a struggle most of her life.

Young's work consists of creating an emotional connection between Epilepsy, optical illusions and functional pottery. She hopes to create awareness of Epilepsy and the impact it has day-to-day. The experience of looking at the illusions painted and carved on each vessel causes the viewer to zone-out and see movement. The discombobulating movement or pulsating effect is similar to what a seizure fe

els like. There are many different types of seizures that can range from a Tonic-Clonic seizure (shaking and convulsing) to an Absence seizure (staring out in space). Young has experienced both, and other seizures, throughout her lifetime and is relating it with her artwork. Having the illusions on functional pottery that is intended for everyday use speaks about the disruption of these movements similar to an unexpected seizure in one’s life. Not knowing when or how intense these interruptions may occur, it can take their effect. She challenges you to allow the optical illusions to take effect by staring into the patterns to see the movement and feel the discomfort in your mind. The emotions that come to Young’s mind of her experiences are anxiety with shortness of breath, the feeling of passing out, and confusion similar to lucid dreaming. By allowing your mind to open up to the possibilities of these feelings, you are then able to connect with those who have this struggle of Epilepsy.
