Most cultivation failures start before the first plant enters the room.

It usually comes down to three things: unverified genetics, no baseline testing across inputs like water, soil, and mother stock, and relying on visual inspection when plants can appear healthy while issues develop beneath the surface.

Together, these gaps allow biological risk to enter early and move undetected through the cycle.

Control starts before planting. Verify genetics, establish a baseline, and build visibility into the operation from day one.

A single negative test can create a false sense of confidence.

Everything may look clean at the start, but a test only reflects a moment in time, confirming what’s present then, not what may be introduced next.

Biological risk moves through the facility, and without repeat testing, new exposure moves forward with the crop and compounds quietly.

Operators who maintain stable output build testing into their SOP, tracking risk across time instead of relying on a single result.

Plants don't fail all at once. Pathogens move through a grow the same way your workflow does.

What looks like a nutrient issue or stress is often something spreading underneath. By the time you see it, it's already across rooms.

The fix is simple: test early and test consistently. Know what's in your plants before it becomes a problem.

TUMI brings that visibility into your daily workflow, so you can catch risk early and protect your crop.

Cultivation is built over time, with genetics and workflows becoming more consistent each cycle. Biological risk moves differently, often spreading quietly before anything looks off.

PCR has long been the standard for confirming what’s present, providing the sensitivity and reliability growers depend on. LAMP offers speed and simplicity, but earlier versions came with limitations that made it harder to trust in practice.

TUMI has optimized LAMP to address those limitations, making it a dependable tool that can operate alongside PCR rather than fall short of it. Testing can move in-house, results come faster, and teams can run it often enough to catch issues earlier without the same cost or delay.

We designed TUMIGlow to bring that capability directly into the facility, so visibility becomes part of the daily workflow and decisions happen while there’s still time to act.

PCR confirms what’s there. Optimized LAMP helps you see risk earlier. Together, they create a more complete view of biological risk across the entire cycle.

A pair of pruning scissors can touch hundreds of plants in a single day. Every time that blade moves from one plant to the next, whatever is on it moves too.

Most sanitation routines rely on alcohol wipes or quick dips between plants. It feels practical in a busy room where speed matters.

The problem is that some pathogens, especially viroids, are far more resistant than most people expect. Which means time and money spent on alcohol treatments may not be stopping transmission at all.

A review of 10 scientific studies evaluating more than 50 disinfectant treatments found that many common sanitation practices do not reliably prevent viroid transmission.

Even alcohol dips or heat treatments can leave tools capable of spreading infection from one plant to the next.

In cultivation, protecting plant health often comes down to small decisions repeated thousands of times across a facility.

Across multiple studies and plant species, one solution appeared consistently effective: household bleach (sodium hypochlorite).

When used at a 10–20% dilution with at least 60 seconds of contact time, bleach reliably deactivates viroids on tools, equipment, and surfaces.

In a cultivation facility, disinfecting only works when the chemistry, dilution, and contact time are all correct.

Mother plants and clones set the direction for the entire season.

If a pathogen enters at this stage, it rarely stays contained. It moves with every cutting, every tray, and every transfer across the facility.

Experienced cultivation teams know the earliest stage determines everything that follows.

And a few small habits can make a major difference:

✂️ Use properly disinfected scissors between plants
This helps prevent mechanical transmission and protects the genetics that may produce hundreds or thousands of future cuts.

🧪 Test your inputs
Soil, water, and propagation media can introduce pathogens long before symptoms appear. Verifying these materials are clean before they reach mother plants reduces that risk.

🌱 Quarantine incoming clones
Even when nurseries provide documentation, new clones should be inspected and quarantined before entering the main cultivation space.

🔬 Verify with a root pool test
Sampling roots from different spots in the tray helps confirm plant health rather than relying only on supplier claims.

Isolation, sanitation, and input testing all work together to protect the genetics that will define the season ahead.

Protecting what you’re building starts with understanding the unseen risks that can wipe out crops completely.

Over the next few weeks, TUMI Genomics will be sharing insights on pathogen testing and biological risk management at several industry events.

Our CEO Nash will be speaking at:
📅 ICBC Berlin: Session Title - Cannabis Genetics April 15th at 12:40pm
📅 NECANN Boston: Genetics Sourcing: the Foundation of your Strategy on Friday, April 24th @ 12 pm.

And our team will also attend and participate in Roll Call at Spannabis!

Each session and conversation will focus on helping operators better understand biological risk and safeguard their crops and investment.

If you’ll be at any of these events, let us know in the comments so we can connect and continue

Sometimes, the difference between protecting a harvest and losing part of it comes down to time.

A few days can mean the difference between catching a pathogen early or discovering it after it has already spread through a room. In many cases, that delay simply comes down to testing timelines and how quickly teams can see what is happening inside the crop.

Until recently, that kind of visibility often required sending samples to a laboratory and waiting for results. TUMIGlow brings molecular pathogen testing directly into the cultivation facility, allowing cultivators to screen plants on-site and receive results in about an hour without complex laboratory equipment.

The system was built for real cultivation environments. Tests are simple to run, stable at room temperature, and include an internal control that distinguishes a true negative from a failed test.

With the ability to screen up to 48 samples in roughly an hour, cultivators gain earlier visibility into plant health before issues spread through the crop.

Hop latent viroid (HLVd) doesn’t begin with obvious failure.

It begins quietly.

A room can appear healthy while infection spreads through routine propagation. Early symptoms often resemble minor stress—easy to overlook, easy to dismiss.

By the time reduced vigor or cannabinoid output becomes visible, performance has already been compromised.
Because HLVd spreads mechanically, it compounds across cycles. What starts small can follow genetics forward, affecting future harvests.

Protection requires more than visual inspection. It requires structured detection.

TUMI delivers validated HLVd diagnostics through both lab services and TUMIGlow, a rapid, onsite testing platform built for real cultivation environments.

See how to detect early—and protect every cycle.
