When we hear things like this, it's a flag for us to get curious. Often, what comes next is finger pointing and blame.

Are We Working Together, Or Not?

Some teams aren't in conflict. They're just not quite connected.
No blowup, no obvious tension. Just people declining to fully engage, and progress that should be happening somehow isn't.

Here's the question that's easy to skip because it sounds too basic: can we count on each other?

Worth bringing to the team and talking through honestly. Because when people aren't sure they can rely on each other, they quietly stop trying to get somewhere together.

The goal was never a perfect team. It's a team where people can count on each other and that starts with being willing to ask whether you have one.

Kicked off the morning with City of Loveland at their Employee Wellness Fair. It was fun asking attendees what was working well for their teams right now.

One takeaway from their answers?

Strong communication is vital to surfing the waves of uncertainty that seem to keep coming.

There's no getting back to "the way it's supposed to be."

This is discontinuous change: non-incremental, sudden change that threatens the existing authority or power structure because it drastically alters how things are done or have been done for years.

If recent years are any indication, discontinuous change is becoming the new normal. Living in that reality can feel unsettling, unless a team is ready for it.

Scarcity doesn't always show up as budget cuts. Sometimes it's just the feeling that there isn't enough — enough time, enough support, enough certainty about what comes next.

When that feeling settles in, the instinct is to pull in. Go quiet. Stop reaching out. That's not weakness; it's human. And it's also how good teams come apart without anyone deciding they should.

Scarcity raises the blame. It stalls progress. It turns colleagues into competitors nobody set out to create.
What helps is naming it plainly, then asking a different question together: what do we actually have right now, and what can we build from here?

The teams that stay connected when things are tight aren't naive. They keep refusing to let fear make their decisions for them.
