Did you know that May is National Wildfire Awareness month? With wildfire becoming more a prevalent part of life in Western Colorado, it is more important than ever to remain educated and prepared. In 2025, over 250,000 acres were burned by wildfire. In fact, four of the five largest wildfires in Coloradoโ€™s history have occurred in the last six years. Please stay bear aware this spring!

More bears are showing up across Colorado, and itโ€™s not by accident. Check out this bear selfie from the Western Spanish Peak.

CPW says drought is limiting natural food like berries and grasses, so bears are moving more to find calories.

Thatโ€™s why sightings are increasing, especially near neighborhoods.

With the return of warmer temperatures and spring conditions across the Arapaho Roosevelt Pawnee, please remember to incorporate good mud-season etiquette into your recreation plans. Muddy trails and roads are easily damaged by heavy foot, motor vehicle, bike or horse traffic. Stepping off-trail to avoid muddy or flooded areas can widen trails, damage surrounding plants and create further drainage issues on the trail itself.

Most seasonal roads remain closed until at least mid-May. If you encounter water or mud on an road, do not attempt to cross without checking the depth and do not leave the road surface to bypass obstacles. If it is not safe to cross, turn around! Consider finding trails or roads that are hard-surfaced or in areas with lower rainfall or runoff. These simple steps can help to preserve road and trail systems, increasing and maintaining ease of access for fellow recreationists.
