Don’t bypass the details. 10% of your church budget can tell a big story.

A helpful benchmark is to think about it in three categories:
→ Administration — the systems and support that keep ministry running
→ Internal Ministry — the resources that make ministry happen inside your church
→ External Missions — the resources going beyond your walls to serve your community, support missions, and plant churches

And remember: these are guidelines, not hard-and-fast rules. The goal is to understand where your dollars are going, and make sure they’re supporting the mission you’re called to.

Where does the 70% go in the 90 / 70 / 10 / 10 / 10?

For most churches, the two biggest expenses are also two of the most important: staffing + building.

A healthy target is to keep those two expenses at or below 70% of your budget, combined.

Based on data we’ve surveyed from churches we’ve worked with, that often looks something like:
• 40–45% toward staffing
• 20–25% toward building and facilities

Those percentages will shift depending on your church’s size, season, and circumstances. The goal isn’t to hit an arbitrary number at the expense of your people, it’s to understand your financial reality and build a budget that can sustain it.

That’s why we use the 90 / 70 / 10 / 10 / 10 principle. And yes, we know the math looks a little suspicious at first. 😅

Over the next few posts, we’ll break down what each number means and how this framework can help you build a healthier, more sustainable church budget.

First up: why 90% is the foundation. ➡️

Here’s where it starts: don’t build your budget around 100% of projected income. Build around 90%.

That margin gives your church room for the unexpected, space to save, and flexibility to respond when new opportunities arise. Budgeting for every projected dollar assumes everything will go exactly according to plan... and we all know that’s rarely how real life works.

Your church budget tells a story. The question is: are people hearing the right one?

In this episode of Distilled, Dan and Greg talk about the difference between showing your budget by accounting categories and showing it by mission.

Because “45% on staffing” may be accurate, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

That staffing may be discipling students, investing in kids, planting churches, and serving your community.

People want to know their generosity is making an impact. Help them see how every dollar supports the mission God has called your church to.
