New first-gen students in the Class of 2026 begin their dental journey. A first-generation college student is a student whose parents have not completed a four-year degree or higher. Such students often have numerous characteristics that are highly desirable in dental students—self-motivation, grit, and understanding the complexity of health disparities in dentistry, among several others.

CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Gilbaugh!

For those that didn’t know, Dr. Gilbaugh served as the principal for Heritage Christian School this school year. His efforts resulted in him being recognized as a 2023 Innovators in Education Award Winner. The Iowa City Area Business Partnership and Iowa City Area Development Group honored Dr. Gilbaugh with the Spark Award - This award is given to individuals who go above and beyond in order to create a learning environment where all students have a chance to succeed, and all instructors feel the freedom to innovate. Congratulations Dr. Gilbaugh on this awesome honor!

The Iowa Rural Development Council Iowa Rural Development Summit held a breakout session on the Fulfilling Iowa’s Need for Dentists program. Pleased to have two former FIND recipients, Dr. Tony Brantner from Algona, and Dr. Bryn Johnson from Iowa Falls, along with Ethan Pitt, MA from Iowa Area Development Group, Maureen Elbert from Kossuth-Palo Alto County Economic Development Corp. and Beth Jones, our Director of Community Impact on the panel yesterday to share more about this impactful program that is building access to oral healthcare in rural Iowa.
